Xsara picasso gear linkage or box fail

Unread post by xsara92 »

My cherished X Picasso 1.6hdi exclusive is off road having popped the circlip (recovered) off one of the gear linkage control rods (hope thats correct term!)

But the roadside mechanic thought repair would be more than than just replacing this part...

On failure the car stuck itself in 3rd gear, with the gearstick losing 'notchiness' in the up/down plane of motion (but it still moves left/right with the springy feel back towards the centre, though you can't get neutral...) (Reverse also seems to be out of order).

Mechanic wanted to lock the car in 2nd gear, but he said he was unable to change gear via the rods.
I think he said that the primary rod the gearstick engages, was moving with the gearstick when it shouldn't....?

There's one more detail, which is that in December 2024, the gear linkage 'pivot arm' was welded by a garage as part of a clutch and flywheel replacement job. I assume this was a temp fix when the cable assembly probably needed renewing? However seems welding would be more difficult than replacement so I am puzzled there :?

I see that gear linkages are still available for this car (well according to ebay..). Assume it's a bit of labour time, because Citroen :-D but surely can't be worse than gearbox off?!

On the other hand, I don't know if I should assume that I've damaged the gearbox and/or clutch to the extent that they need replacement as well...
The clutch took some abuse when I had to limp the car to a temporary off-road location, because I had to pull off in 3rd several times...smelt a hot clutch :(
As for the gearbox, it had been ''whining'' following 2nd-3rd and 3rd-4th changes for the last 10-15k miles 8-[ not always, but more often than not with the engine hot. On the other hand, it was very rare for the car to fall out of gear and gear changes were all fairly easy and I never heard any grinding noises of any kind....transmission oil was topped up about 2k miles ago, whine went away for maybe 500 miles, shame I didn't do a full change..

I do have a Cit/Peug garage in town that talked about £1k for gearbox and clutch replacement, which is far less than what I paid in Dec 2024 for a clutch, flywheel and some welding!

I'm not sure if you are asking for advice or just recording your tale? :)
I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure!
I used to ride on two wheels, but now I need all four!

Haha Mick good point, yes hoping somebody has seen this happen before (especially on a Citroen from 2005), and did they end up with an unviable repair?
It seems to me the gear linkages need examining, renewing and reattaching, but I would really welcome any other viewpoints :)
