Partner Teepee 2012 Aircon weirdness

Unread post by AMacdonald »

Just as the hot weather hit this week, the aircon on my 2012 Partner Outdoor (I pity everyone with the indoor edition) packed up. One day it was fine. The next, much hotter, day it wasn't.

I've just hooked up the Diagbox computer and am able to manually activate the compressor clutch. I also found out I can activate the aircon when the blower is in the slowest number 1 position. As soon as I choose a faster fan the clutch disengages and the briefly cold air warms up. The clutch disengaging is visible in the live data feed in Diagbox.

The only thing I can see is that the displayed refrigerant pressure may be quite low (?) at about 8 bar. This drops to about 6 when the AC is active. On selecting a higher fan speed, the evaporator temperature drops to about 9-10 degrees (after the clutch is disengaged) before climbing back to the high teens. Could the pressure force the AC off when a higher airflow is requested? Neither of the high or low pressure inhibitor parameters is active.

Answered my own question, as is often the way. I realised that the No 1 fan speed was even more feeble than I remembered and in fact not working at all. Swapping out the fan ballast resistor (one of the most annoying simple jobs) restored the AC to normal functioning. I've no idea how or why, but it has.
