Hi.
A newbie here….
I recently test drove a 2016 (66 plate) relay.
It’s on 170k miles, but, as an ex-patient transport vehicle, should have been well serviced.
It drove really nice - clutch, steering, gear change, brakes, etc.
However, after a few miles, once it had warmed up, and in stationary then moving traffic, it started bellowing out white smoke.
No dash warnings and temp gauge good.
I found somewhere to pull over, kept engine running, it cleared. When I drove the journey back to seller’s house - it didn’t smoke at all.
I didn’t feel comfortable with this situation, as I had many miles to do (300), to get back to my home.
Since the test drive last week, I’ve been reading up on ‘white smoke’ issues.
I guess inevitably, it’s pointing to a regen issue?
I’ve feel educated on the 5th injector - which I didn’t even know existed.
There’s a really good write up on the Peugeot boxer page (same 2.2 hid engine), where this chap explains the temps being registered and fed to the eco, by the pre and post dpf sensors. If it regents too cold - it pumps out white smoke.
At this stage - it sounds a plausible probability?
I realise you can down many rabbit holes trying to diagnose issues similar to this, but, I thought I’d throw it out there.
Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

That does sound like a cool regen issue. Give the van its head for 20 mins on the motorway keeping the revs up and you should get a decent regen.
I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure!

If you plugged it in for a diagnostic it can probably tell you when it last had a regen which could confirm your thoughts.
I would also check the coolant level in case it is leaking in to the cylinders. I once had a petrol Saab that surrounded itself in white smoke and that was since the turbo had failed. If there is an adblue overdosing problem that might give white smoke.

Thanks. Unfortunately, I didn’t have diagnostics with me.
I did intend to buy a ‘topdon topscan’ which is. 2 way and does live data………

General tip, before you commit to any Diagnostic system ask the supplier to confirm that it will provide FULL FUNCTIONS for your vehicle.

Re: Potential 2016 relay purchase
Beware of which engine a 2016 van has. My boxer van is a 16plate and has the earlier engine which is brilliant. It was during 2016 that the engine changed. The newer engine is the ford transit ecoboost engine which has a wet belt as far asi know and is temperamental. I can't remember where read that and howI found out which engine mine has. I think I asked at a Peugeot dealer, mine is a pug, what the timing belt change interval is and he took my vans details and said to be happy mine has a timing chain not the dreaded wet belt.
I see yours has a dpf and does regens. My one doesn't have a dpf, so doesn't need regens so the one you are thinking of is probably a wet belt newer engine. My one suffers from the typical low mileage problem of the gear change being obstructive. This is the second one I have owned and both have had poor gear changes.
