gear stick cables replacement

Hi all, Kangoo van diesel 2016. Was driving back to Brighton on Sunday on M25 when the gear stick went all floppy and was stuck in gear. Thankfully roads were quiet and managed to get back to the house stuck in 5th gear. Ive started to strip out the cables and have couple of questions, anyone done this before please?

Struggling to get this rubber boot and metal piece free to get cables out

Any tips or advice would be greatly received

Have you tried releasing lubricant around the end of the boot?
