Have to admit that I would probably have bodged it with one of these:-
As long as it were to remain dry.

The original pic was a bit bright and shiny, but did make a decsnt job of the firestick. The revision you would be hard pushed to identify it and indeed I was going to compliment you on your observation!

Not enough (indeed none at all) tail on the broken white wire to restore that fitting without the destruction Steve. No doubt the very experienced with the "knack" will be able to de-pin those connectors, but they did come out with a little bit of reasonable force but enough of the white one needed exposing to get it out.myglaren wrote: 06 Apr 2026, 18:52 Have to admit that I would probably have bodged it with one of these:-

Re: Falcon's Bargain Basement Motoring
The Knock Sensor Resistance between the pins, off the scale on all scales of the Multimeter up to 2000k ohms
The internet tells me a typical resistance value for a knock sensor..2.5k ohms to 3.5 k ohms.
Cant think that sensor is sending any useful info to the ecu, and I have never heard the clio pink or knock in its life!

Assuming the original sensor is now dead as a Dodo, and probably has been for some time, not sure what change a new one is likely to bring.
The most common motor factors round here are NAPA, supplying the trade as well as retail. For some things they are quite competitive, for Knock sensors for a 23 Year old Clio's way way way off the mark. £55 plus VAT.
The autodoc one I linked to earlier with matching OEM number...£12.99 inc VAT excl delivery costs.
No contest

Re: Falcon's Bargain Basement Motoring
Would you then twiddle with the distributor/carburettor to cure the knocking Mick?

Re: Falcon's Bargain Basement Motoring
Had a decent run out today in the BB Clio for the first time following the putting back together.
Threw up the usual P0130 on the run out, but reset it and for the rest of what I would call a spirited drive where the rev counter exceeded 6000 on numerous occasions, on stopping it calmed down to a nice tick-over with no "hunting" at around 600 rpm which is normal, and the rest of the spirited drive did not upset the upstream O2 sensor enough for it to throw the P0130 code back at the ECU.
I am still holding the new MAP sensor in reserve, todays drive was with the existing sensor. I think the final throw of the dice will be a new O2 sensor and I will have exhausted my desire to fix and move on, to a move on as-is project for someone!

Re: Falcon's Bargain Basement Motoring
I'm optimistic Neil, if the ECU has twigged that knock sensor is dead, it'll ignore it. That'd likely mean it is, I think, retarding the timing to try and be "safe" - I'm sure I've read knock sensor equipped engines run "as much advance as possible"
So I think the twelve quid could give more power / efficiency??
Good work on the creative sensor wiring fix!

Re: Falcon's Bargain Basement Motoring
Thanks Matt always nice to have a bit of optimism and encouragement much appreciated. I wouldn't mind finding the two pin connector from the loom with a length of red wire and white wire tails to mate with a new knock sensor. I presume the connector will be pretty much the same across a range of cars but if it is Clio specific then its going to take an effort to find. Quite a rarity the Clio in the scrapyards round here last time I had a mooch.MattBLancs wrote: 10 Apr 2026, 06:58 I'm optimistic Neil, if the ECU has twigged that knock sensor is dead, it'll ignore it. This firm from Kent were very helpful a couple of years ago might give them a call, save charging around the scrapyards seeing a Clio on the highest rack and asking them to get it down so I can take off a 50p connector!

Re: Falcon's Bargain Basement Motoring
Correct O2 sensor OEM 8200052063
Loads of different Manufacturers...the new ones I got a couple of years ago were Cambiare VE381009 compatible with OEM 8200052063.
They should still be OK.
The rear of the ECU is emblazoned with Magneti Morelli....Autodoc have the Magnetti Morelli version of the 8200052063 sensor so I may give that one a whirl!

Re: Falcon's Bargain Basement Motoring
Not a particularly good example (given the forty quid postage rather undermines a pretty good price for the part!)
But maybe look out for a knock sensor removed in that way scrapyards often seem to favour (hack it off complete with chunk of loom)

Re: Falcon's Bargain Basement Motoring
Thanks Matt, That's the exact thing (the brown bit!). Pop the bonnet up on anything Renault of a certain age and something similar must be lying around.
Took the plunge and ordered the new knock sensor and that Magneti Morelli O2 Sensor from Auto Doc for a combined £50 delivered.
