Crunching gears

Unread post by Barney00731102012 »

I’ve got a Peugeot Boxer 1.9td 2000 Autosleeper, just done 4,000 miles touring around Scotland and outer Hebrides, apparently it had a reconditioned gearbox and complete new clutch when I brought it. I changed the gearbox oil before setting off with the recommended oil by Opie oils and fitted a magnetic sump plug. It’s not to bad when it’s cold , after that it crunches from 3rd to 4th and 5th to 4th all other gears are fine, I presume many other people have experienced this sort of issue, is it better to put thicker oil in if so what grade etc, as I don’t really want to put an additive in it as I’ve read these seem to be a temporary solution. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

So you are saying it crunches putting it into 4th from above or below? That sounds like a possible synchro ring issue. Can you slip it in and out of 4th if you match the revs with the throttle to the road speed? Easiest way of checking that is to drive along a straight road at a steady speed for 4th gear. Take note of the engine revs as you cruise then dip the clutch and take it out of gear, release the clutch, then get the revs to the same figure as you read and dip the clutch again and see if it goes into 4th smoothly. :)
I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure!

Exactly which type of oil did you fill it with?

I drained the gearbox oil out today which Opie oils recommended to use which was Total gear8 70w 80, when I put it in it was up to the level plug,The magnetic drain plug definitely did it’s job. Anyway after a bit of research I’ve put 80w 90 in 3ltrs. Well I’ve got a long drive tomorrow so we will see how it is when it’s hot. ( fingers crossed)

Opie oils have always got their recommendations wrong for me.....they like to call themselves "experts" but from my experience they just "look it up on the internet" it seems. If I had followed their advice I would have knackered both a Xantia and a C5x7 auto gearbox !

That said, their prices and delivery are very good...........so if you know what you want...

That's interesting to hear. I haven't used them but had been led to believe that they were pretty good.
I have no desire for an autobox and buy my oil locally. It is probably not as crucial (except for the current Mazda 6 diesel) but last time I bought any it was the right spec and cheaper than Opie quoted.

Pretty sure that the correct oil is 75W 80 and it must be GL4 spec, not GL5. Also, 3 litres sounds far too much.

The traxium gear 8 seems to be an appropriate oil.
Perhaps the synchromesh in the transmission has been previously damaged, perhaps by driving with a failed clutch mechanism?

I was told that people put 3 ltrs in because when hot the 5 gear doesn’t get enough oil, and people put 80w 90 in as it better around the gears when hot. The trouble is there’s so much information out there, in the end for me it’s trial and error, if this works that’s great if not it will be a recon gearbox,

Just to say I’ve done 200 miles today it was slightly stiff to select first gear when cold, but a mile up the road and things definitely improved seems a lot smoother 3rd to 4th ,miles better and so is 5th to 4th, not perfect but I can’t certainly live with for the time being before investing in another gearbox.
