EGR fault

Unread post by Madsemann »

Hi,

I’m having recurring issues with my Citroën Jumpy 1.6 HDi (2011) and would appreciate some input.

Background:
The car went into limp mode with engine light and ESP light. It wouldn’t rev past ~2000–3000 rpm.

I read fault codes and found several EGR-related errors. I replaced the EGR valve with an aftermarket unit (JP Group). After that, the car ran perfectly for about 1 month / ~500 km.

Now the exact same problem has returned.

Symptoms:
• Limp mode (limited power)
• Engine light + ESP light
• Drives normally after clearing codes (temporarily)
• Can drive fine for periods after clearing. Yesterday I drove 20km without any faults.

Fault codes (before and after EGR replacement):
• P0405 – EGR sensor circuit low
• P0401 – Insufficient EGR flow
• P0409 – EGR position sensor fault
• P0489 – EGR control circuit low
• P0490 – EGR control circuit high
• P1162 – Air flow deviation

What has been done:
• Replaced EGR valve (JP Group aftermarket)
• Cleared fault codes multiple times
• Car runs normally after reset, but issue returns
• EGR connector looks visually clean and intact

Observations:
• Problem existed before EGR replacement
• New EGR worked for a while, then same type of faults returned
• Errors include both:
• electrical signal faults (low/high)
• position sensor faults
• airflow deviation

Next steps:
• I have Purchased new EGR from Pierburg (OEM quality)
• Planning to:
• clean MAP sensor
• clean intake at EGR port
• inspect wiring and ground points again

Questions:
1. Could this still be wiring/ground related even though it worked for a while?
2. Is it common for aftermarket EGR valves (like JP Group) to fail like this?
3. Do I need to perform EGR calibration/adaptation, or is plug-and-play sufficient?

Any input is appreciated 👍

In addition to checking the egr connector I would check the plugs into the BSI/BMS as all wiring has two ends!! :)
I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure!
I used to ride on two wheels, but now I need all four!

Thanks for reply! Do you know if not recalibrating the egr could be the cause of the codes to come back?

I believe that is a possibility. Hopefully someone with better knowledge will confirm that :)
