Citroen DS3 No USB port

Unread post by almalaci »

I'm planning to pull the trigger on a 12 plate Citroen DS3 DStyle + but it doesn't have a USB socket underneath the AUX cover. This is a deal-breaker for me as I mainly listen to music from my pendrive. The lack of USB port is strange as all the other DS3's at this trim level I have viewed had it. Before I buy it, I want to make sure I can put in an aftermarket USB connection. The head unit seems to be the standard Citroen/Peugeot one. Could someone tell me if it's doable by getting an USB-enabled Aux socket and wiring loom, etc and connecting it? Do all head units have USB connectors?I would even consider swapping the head unit for a stock Citroen USB-enabled one if that's needed. If I have to do that, does the new head unit need re-coding, or would it need special equipment or contacting manufacturers headquarters, or anything like that? My previous experience doing this on a Vauxhall was awful and eventually hit a brick wall because the aftermarket USB unit I fitted needed re-coding by Opel headquarters in Germany which every Vauxhall garage in the UK I tried refused to do. I'd like to know if it's even remotely similar with Citroen, in which case I will steer well clear of this car.
Any ideas would be welcome.
Many Thanks,
Laszlo

There is always something as simple as this: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/297299597616
I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure!
I used to ride on two wheels, but now I need all four!

Micks suggeston gets you USB charging but not pendrive/memory stick reading.

You say that others with that trim level have USB ports, so maybe the one you are looking at has already been "messed about with" - I doubt a dealer would be interested in re-coding a 14 year old car radio if it did need coding. No idea if it does or not, up to the late 90s you had a code you entered into the radio to make it work, since then I've lost touch. Some one might be along who knows.

There are fewer than half the dealerships there were when that one was sold, and PSA/Citroen split the brands so even fewer DS - about 30 of which 9 in London. There may be independents who can use the diagnostic tool to get a rew radio recognised, but recalling our C3 of that era you needed the buttons on the radio to do things like set the date in the display.

As you say its a 'deal breaker' and there are thousands of used cars out there, why buy one that hasn't got the feature you want, change the unit and risk ending up with no functioing sound system at all? If you have set your heart on it, another option is to burn loads of stuff to CDs, if you drop the bit rate you can get a couple of hours on one disc, that's what I did with my C5 in the pre-USB and bluetooth days.

Moving on, 2012 was in the date range of DS3s with a 'stop drive' recall last year because of a potentially dangerous airbag fault - read the Takada thread at the top of this forum - and make sure it has been done before you buy.

Thanks for your replies. I didn't get email notifications on your posts so I've only seen them now, sorry. I have bought the car as it was a good deal and fairly local, so I guess the USB wasn't a deal-breaker after all. I will try retrofitting it with USB but since it's not going to be my main car but a weekend/social one only, I will survive without USB if I have to. I doubt that part of the car has been messed with, as I don't see the point of replacing an original USB-aux socket with an aux-only one. The Bluetooth on the head unit also doesn't work though so I got another £50 knocked off the price. So a new head unit is likely needed anyway.
My plan is to compare a wiring loom connector from a USB-enabled car from a breakers with mine to assess if the whole thing is worth getting into. If it is and I manage to buy the socket, possibly new head unit and connect it all up, I'll be buying a Peugeot/Citroen diagnostic scanner as I also have a Peugeot van that I need another key programmed for, making it worth the investment.

Richard_C, thanks for your reminder of the airbag, I was assured by the former keeper that it was done and I also double-checked the recall status on the Citroen website.

If anyone has any advice regarding the USB retrofit and changing head units, and if my plan at all makes sense, that would be much appreciated.
