I might have posted about this sometime last year, but the situation repeats itself.
I got my Green Flag UK & Europe renewal for late January, a 57% increase since last year. Had it been 10% or so I might not have done anything. The price seemed fair compared to the competition but the increase was absurd.
Anyway, I've cancelled the auto-renew and will take out a new policy starting one day before (you have to wait 24 hours from policy start date to get all the recovery cover etc.). The same policy with Green Flag as a new customer is c. £40 cheaper than a renewal and barely any more than last year. So - lose a day (0.27%) save 52% on premium.
The whole performance, cancelling the renewal and taking out the new policy, took about 20 minutes most of whcih was the phone call to cancel.
The FCA rules about not offering better rates to new customers than renewals ONLY applies to some specific products, not to all products, so you may well be able to save yourself a few £££ by not auto renewing such things.
Green Flag Renewal, take care :)

This happens to us every year but I do not bother phoning up to cancel the old policy, just start the new one through their website to begin on the day the old one runs out. They are part of the Direct Line group and Direct Line do the same with car policies but for these you have to phone up to get the price back down or as we did eventually after many years changed to the AA for our cars. Now they are part of Aviva it might change.

It seems to happen with all businesses now.
I've been doing the family tree and had a subscription to ancestry.co.uk, at the beginning of December they wanted to auto renew at £179.00 so I cancelled, today I was offered a worldwide annual sub for £88.00.

When you cancel Ancestry do you lose everything you have done so when taking out a new sub would need to start all over again ?

The records and your membership remain as you have inputted them. What you lose is the ability to browse and retrieve records that are subscription only. Actually, you might be able to search but when you get possible matches you'll be "encouraged" to upgrade so that you can view the result.
