309 Diesel cold start wax stat

Unread post by Gsbx1220 »

Hi,

I think the wax stat for cold start on my 1993 309 1.7 turbo is a bit lazy.

As far as I know the Peugeot part No that autodoc website list is164762 / 164753 Autodoc have no stock. When I search this I get the following e-bay listing https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/175097792252
On the compatibility chart the 309 is not listed, but other XUD engines are.
Is this just the same part used on all cars?
Mine has Lucas pump.

Thanks & all the best for 2026
Richard

I think they were fairly standard on the XUD engine apart from the XUD 11, that one was located in the radiator return, on the back of the engine.

They do get lazy and fail to work over time. You really don't need one. All it does is to give a bit of fast idle when the engine is cold...

Yes, I replaced one on a Xantia I owned in the late ‘90’s
Only owned this car since the beginning of Nov. When we (its actually my Nephews first car) the idle was a bit fast, so i brought it down a bit. Started fine each morning and ran OK.
Cold weather arrives and on cold mornings the engine idle is too low and occasionally cuts on deceleration. I adjusted the cold idle cable yesterday and that brought up the idle on cold start nicely to just over 1000 rpm, but it doesn’t reduce when warm.
I think in the past, the idle was raised to compensate for the wax stat not being 100% and by me reducing the idle to what it should be when warm has highlighted this.

I'm sure you know this if you've replaced one before. Get the engine warm, make sure there is a little free play in the waxstat cable, set the idle accordingly, should be good to go. When the engine is cold the next morning there shouldn't be any free play.

We put a bit of making tape on the inner cable where it goes into the outer cable. The masking tape hasn’t moved indicating that the wax stat isn’t relaxing the cable as the engine warms up.

I ran my BX with a knackered wax stat for years, nice to have it working not essential as Jim said. Just a few mm's on the right foot on the cold start does the same thing

OP, My old mate Dean Hunter at Peugeotpartsuk is showing both 1647.53 & 1647.62.

He has retired now and his son has taken over his old parts dept. Dean Jnr can be contacted at www.peugeotcitroenrepairs.co.uk . He will mail one to you.

By the way, he is a very handy guy to know for old Peugeot parts, its huge new and second hand stuff
