Just wondering if anyone has installed an inline thermostat to avoid replacing the block mounted thermostat housing when stuck in the open position?
I dont have the time or tools to gain access and replace the stock thermostat housing, also quoted £300 for the job to be done, not to mention the hassle of connecting the rear return correctly.
I only need the car until May.
Would it be possible to install an inline thermostat on the top hose and bypass to the bottom or use a drilled thermostat with no dedicated bypass?
This would cost about £50 and a couple hrs compared to £300 or a nightmare replacing the original housing myself.
Would the pilot element and ecu logic be happy about this?

Maybe you could, but I can't see it being much easier than fitting the correct part, particularly with the risk of it not working correctly.

Slow water temp rising. At idle it will rise but driving it will never rise so i suspect the stat is jammed open. Water pump feels like its working as pinching the top hose will simulate a closed stat and i can feel the water pressure and the temp rising on the engine side when pinched. No leaks on the stock stat housing so im happy to fit one inline but im just curious if anyone has done this to avoid the costly replacement or they dont have the time or tools to carry it out. The car is in constant use so i cannot afford to do it myself and comfront any issues then render the car useless. It seems feasible and cost friendly however id like to know if anyone has done this on a 207 or similar.
Edit, looking at the system it looks like the heater matrix handles the bypass and it never closes as there is only one exit for the coolant to flow inside the stat cavity. So id be basicly moving the stat to the outside (spliced into the top hose) either with a trickle bypass or a full bypass going back to the pump.

Its ok. Just got word that it can be done as long as the matrix circuit still flows. Bypass can go into the return or a bleed inline will be fine but wont run close to 100c. Thanks

Is the car being scrapped in May, if not any money you save now might be a reduction in the price you get for it when being sold.
