Ds3 1.6 ehdi Dead? Turbo failure leading to Scrap yard??

Unread post by sixfoottwo »

Hi all and Merry Christmas!

I'm just after some thoughts on this please, here goes.

My OH was driving the Ds3 normally as you do then all of a sudden without warning it started to emit white smoke and a horrible smell in the car with the Revs going bonkers for a short time.

RAC came out to it and checked it over and mentioned it sounds like a Diesel runaway! there was no oil left on the dipstick and he reckons the Turbo is faulty as he couldn't easily spin the turbo when he tried.

Does anybody know If the engine is now toast and therefore not to bother looking at a new turbo etc.

Thanks.

If the crankshaft is seized, then the engine is scrap. If the crankshaft is not seized, then the bores or valves or head gasket could be damaged, but a compression test should identify most problems.
Is the coolant level correct and a sensible colour?

We had a Saab and when the turbo failed it gave out a cloud of white smoke. Stopped on the hard shoulder and needed a new turbo and also a new cat and lambda sensor. It was a petrol though so no runaway.

Seems ok, I guess a compression test is needed like you say probably rather foolish of me to think just slap a turbo on it and away we go!

Ok, so i was looking to get a compression kit to test it myself but I've been reading certain kits don't fit, anyone point me to a gauge that fits the 1.6 ehdi engine?

Ta.

This kit is listed as being compatible with PSA engines:

Expensive is a relative term, compare that price with the cost of a garage doing the job and it's not so bad, plus it will effectively be free next time. You may also be able to recoup some cost by renting it out to trusted people for a tenner a go, might even get your money back before we finally manage to destroy the planet! :-D

Haha! I suppose so, was trying to diagnose/fix this on a budget but I guess it would work out cheaper than a Garage!
