Oil in Coolant?

Unread post by Hannya92 »

Hi, im new to the C5 world and I only own my current car for about 2 weeks.

It has been maintained by the previous owner and it was serviced before I bought it, but I noticed this morning that the coolant has a weird colour ( cream brown liquid- attached picture), after a bit of investigation it seems theres oil in the coolant.

This leads me to believe that this was not checked by a mechanic but its also not something that happen in the past 2weeks - i drove around 500km since i bought it.

CAn you please direct me on what to do here? its a C5 x7 2.0hdi 2021 with 260.000km's

Car runs as normal (for me) and the coolant reaches temperature, i do notice a shortage in powers but thats probably because i was driving a petrol engine with over 200hp for a while.

Also no errors as i checked with OBD and oil is up to level and right colour.

That is not a pretty sight. You clearly have oil mixing with the coolant and the most likely cause is a blown head gasket. It may only be leaking between oil and coolant ways so it will run reasonably well. However all sorts of other issues will develop if you use it like that for any length of time. If the oil level is not changing much then hopefully you have a one way leak from oil to coolant which is less damaging than the other way round but either way it needs further investigation by a mechanic :)

Thanks Mick, i was hoping that i could still run the car and do my 40km commute for another week but y guess is that it will be too risky, also for this to have this looks i assume it must be something thats here for a while right??

Too bad i didnt had a look before buying the car... got distracted with how good the car looked

Was it a private sale or did you buy from a dealer? :)

private, im already in contact with the seller but he wont be back from holydays till next week.

Not really sure if i just put this into the mechanic and get the bill to him or wait and see what he says.

Not expecting to be less than 800eur for the job anyway

Personally I'd wait and see as he may offer to do the job himself as he maintained it. However I wouldn't hold out too much hope because private sale is generally sold as seen!! :)

could one of the causes be the oil cooler? if so what part number would this be for a 2012 C5 manual 2.0 hdi 163hp?

Just checked the car again and oil is of a good consistency at at the level,

that would make more sense as the shifter is not as soft as my wife C5 x7 1.6hdi, but different engines work differently i suppose

is that the picture you are looking for?

Yes, so your RPO is 12643 I will see what I can find but it is not an area I am too familiar with so we may need one of our more experienced members to find that for you. :)

As I feared I cannot find any mention of an oil cooler but I am probably looking in the wrong place!! Hopefully someone with better knowledge will see the thread and help out! :)

One of the places where oil can be mixed with antifreeze is the oil cooler. Since it is not expensive and easy to change (relatively), it would be better to replace it as soon as possible to avoid more damage.
