I made the stupid mistake of buying a 2019 peugeot boxer with a knocking engine thinking I could either put new shells in it or buy a good engine.
Life took a turn (I got a full time job) which left me with vey little time so I contacte an engine rebuild company who said they could do it but didn't know when as they already had a huge queue of vans with similar engines needing rebuilds.
I asked them why and they said these engines don't last and that I was lucky to have one that had made it to 100k miles.
I have owned older Peugeot Expert vans (2.0 HDI) and an older Fiat Ducato and both had well over 200k on the clocks and the engines were still great!
Looking on Facebook Marketplace I see a lot of fairly late Boxers being sold with major engine issues at relatively low mileages and I just wonder if anyone knows why?
COmmon problems described in adverts are bottom end knocking which is the same as mine.
Is it the DPF or Ad Blue system or is it just a genrally poor engine design?
I am slowly rebuilding mine with a new crank, con rod, tappets and rocker arms and I'm wondering what I can do to extend it's life once I finally get it running!
DW10/12 Engine Issues, are they common?

Welcome along
Likely down to thin oils, long service intervals and oil dilution from DPF regens. Best to use a slightly thicker oil, and change it regularly!

DW10/12's are inherently bullet-proof.
Poor maintenance or the DPF application can be the only variable I can think of, there.

Not the ones on the late Boxers/Relays
Lots of common issues on the DW10FUD engines. Excessive oil consumption, premature Timing belt failures, Turbo failures, fuel pumps breaking up.
Certainly not as bullet proof as early HDi engines.

What did they change about the actual engine to achieve that?wheeler wrote: 06 Dec 2025, 09:23 Not the ones on the late Boxers/Relays

Re: DW10/12 Engine Issues, are they common?
Surely the internal issues has to be related to "thinner" oils and extended intervals IMO, fuel pumps not sure though.
For the difference it makes to MPG it's just not worth running anything less than 5w30 (personally everything I own gets 10w40, older cars mind but can't see it causing issues in modern stuff as long as it's low saps)

Which oil would you then recommend for a Boxer with a DW10FUD engine? Peugeot recommends 0W30.

Re: DW10/12 Engine Issues, are they common?
Personally, if I owned one it'd likely get 10w40 as per all my other stuff but would hesitate to recommend this as I'm not 100% on issues like "lifter pump" (excess oil that is too viscous fails to leave the hydraulic lifter as designed at higher RPM, thus creating a situation similar to having tight valve clearances on a mechanical lifter.) I wouldn't expect this to be an issue in a diesel engine but something to consider, as said if it was mine though it'd probably run 10w40.

I would think it'll call for a "Low SAPS" or low ash oil - can you get that in thicker grades? As far as I'm aware DPF equipped HDi vehicles need low SAPS oils.

Ah, yes you can!MattBLancs wrote: 11 Dec 2025, 17:53 I would think it'll call for a "Low SAPS" or low ash oil - can you get that in thicker grades? As far as I'm aware DPF equipped HDi vehicles need low SAPS oils.
E.g.

(I've only ever looked and found 5w40 or 5w40 low SAPS oil, but clearly thicker stuff is out there
