Peugeot expert adblue

Unread post by hs5424 »

Hi All,
I recently purchased a new Peugeot Expert 1.5 diesel van. It's my first van that requires adblue. At about 6,000 klm I got a dashboard notice that adblue was required so I topped it up. After a short drive the adblue dash light went out so all ok. As I approached 10,000 klm I was presented with a count down informing me how many kilometers were remaining before it required adblue or the vehicle would not start. I now topped it up with 20 litres. My question is , does this amount of consumption seem normal as I have used between 20 to 30 litres of adblue in 10,000 klms.
Every person I ask gives me a different answer. I have been told by one mechanic that some vehicles count the number of times the vehicle is started and run the dpf regen accordingly. Some suggest to have it mapped out when the vehicle is outside warranty etc. I don't drive fast and keep the revs down. This I was told by another chap will lead to a higher adblue consumption.
Any technical replies welcome.

The first thing you need to get clear in your mind is that the Adblue system has absolutely nothing to do with the DPF and its regeneration. Knowing that, it does seem a bit on the high side though. 10,000 kms equates to about 6,200 miles. I think if it's a problem to you then you need to get the vehicle read with a reasonably high-end diagnostic machine, preferably Diagbox, for any error codes (DTCs). If you could run some tests on the Adblue injection system while driving the vehicle to see if the injector is performing properly that would be a help.

Do you find that there's a lot of white smoke coming out of the exhaust or that there's a smell of ammonia sometimes? These can be signs of an injector on the way out.

We don't support vehicles with emissions control mechanisms disabled. It may also be illegal in your country anyway and would then cost a lot to have it reinstated.

Our 1.5 hdi 308 uses about 1 litre of adblue per 1000 miles. It could be your van adblue tank was not filled up when first bought. I think this was the case for our 308 since it gave its first warning when only on about 4000 miles which is not far off your 6000 km. Our 1.6 hdi Cactus uses about 1 litre per 1500 miles.

Since your van will still be under warranty you should consider taking it back to the dealer to check.

Have a look in the handbook since you might need to wait a bit before starting when the adblue has been topped up.

I would have said the opposite, The adblue doesn't start injecting till the exhaust temp reached 176 degrees C, The harder it gets driven the more ablue it would use.
Consumption doesent seem too bad, but can vary massively between different cars.
If there are no warnings & no visible leaks i doubt a dealer would do anything under warranty unless the consumption was excessive.

If it was mine & out of warranty i know exactly what i would be doing with it as soon as there was any hint of a fault & it wouldn't be paying a 4 figure amount for a new tank.
