C6 dash blowing up, am I in danger?

Unread post by HelioMV »

Hey everyone. I am now the proud owner of 2x C6s, the original amateur one where the window wouldn't close :) and her donor, who's in the roughest shape I have ever seen a C6 but has the bits I need.

I have upgraded my jump pack to a topdon JS3000. One can only assume it's a 4S LiPo inside as the open circuit voltage is 16.5V and drops to more like 15.3V with a battery that flat at around 11.5V. At around 6V flat, the voltage is 13.5V. A 12V battery sitting normally would result in the car receiving nearly 16V

I want to attach this jump pack to my C6 to start it but I only have one dashboard and I really don't want to blow it. OK I can fix it, but I've heard that jumping a C6 is a no-no. Is this due to fluctuating current being shoved in by another car, is it the voltage that blows it by being too high? Will I be ok, or should I keep this pack away from this car?

Thanks

Since your Topdon comes with a 2 year warranty I would contact them at Support and ask about using it to start your C6. personally I think it will be ok but don't take my word for it, email them from the link below and then if they say OK you will have comeback if something goes wrong!! :)

Personally, I would try charging the battery up with a smart charger over several days. That would completely bypass your worry.

Where did you read that rubbish? I wouldn't even think twice about it, aside form a few extra gadgets the C6 is almost electrically identical to the mk2 C5.

There are even instructions in the handbook on how to jump it

The danger when jumping (on any modern car) is when the car has a completely flat battery, you jump the car then after 30 seconds you disconnect the jump pack/leads, this can create a surge & damage electronic components.
Its actually very common on Mercedes vehicles when you can easily spike the SAM unit if you dont follow the correct Merc procedure.
Ideally you should run the engine for at least 10-15 minutes, turn of the engine & see if the the car can then start off its own battery. If it cant repeat again. after that if there is at least enough juice to switch on dash lights etc then before disconnecting the jump pack/leads from the running car i would turn on some electrical loads like heated screen & blowers (but not the headlamps if its a Merc).

If a C6 2.7 HDI starts poorly and the battery is not the culprit, then in 98% of cases the problem lies with the starter motor. The Denso starter motor should then be replaced and the problem will be solved.

And, of course, a C6 can be started either with a jump start from another car or with a suitable external starting device.

With a higher voltage, the starter motor will then work. In the long term, only replacing the starter motor makes sense.

The jump-start device can either be connected to the battery in the boot – which is very awkward –
or in the engine compartment to the positive terminal and the negative terminal provided for this purpose.

The guy I bought them off. A well respected specialist in this country. He says that it can happen and has happened to him twice, and due to the price of a new one I didn't wanna risk it. I do not have a single good battery that'll hold a charge right now
