XM front hubs

Unread post by Old-Guy »

The N/S/F hub bottom ball joint has started rattling - but it's immovably seized into the hub. :(

So a replacement hub is needed to get her back on the road.

Does anyone know which other models used the same hub please?

Better still, does anyone have one?

I'll post in For Sale & Wanted once I know exactly what I'm looking for.

I've posted similar requests on the XM forum.

Don't know if it's the same as a Xantia?

I got one out Mandrake's Xantia that was very very tight... The castellated tool just chewed up the ring, so I cut the joint off, then welded on the 41mm hex cut off a failed 307 ball joint, applied a LOT of heat, and a very long bar and got it undone. Wheel bearing didn't survive mind you....!

It will come out off the car with LOTS of heat or failing that if you have access to a welder as stated above....... I used a BIG impact gun rather than a bar...
A second person SMACKING the carrier/hub hard with a Percywhatsit to shock it as you try and turn it helps a lot...

The lads at Tony Weston (Cambridge, Glos) spent half-a-day trying to release it (heat, impact, leaving soaking with releasing fluid overnight, repeat) with no success. Replacement hub coming from Citronics later this week.

Apparently all S2 XM hubs are the same.

Reminds me of the fun undoing a Xantia (XUD9) crankshaft bolt - on a 2-post lift. Eventual solution was handbrake on very tight, 5th gear, socket and 900mm breaker with end resting on a block of wood. Slowly lower lift, bar starting to bow, CRACK! 'Oh no!' I thought 'Sheared the bolt - the socket hasn't fallen on the floor so inside the nose of the crankshaft!' Nope. Just the Lock-tight finally surrendering to several hundred Nm.
