C5 2.0 Hdi Coolant Leak

Unread post by yoseff »

Don't know yet exactly what broke to make it happen , but had a large coolant leak (more than 2.5 Liters went out)
The thermostat housing or other plastic tube is the suspect. Only Monday will know.
Anyway , my biggest shock was that unlike the previous C5 , this X7 doesn't warn about low coolant level
Could they do that just to economize some euros? That was surely a huge disappointment regarding the X7...
Did already anyone adapted successfully some warning for low coolant level on the X7? That's something i'd be interested.
Also could i have a diagram of the coolant system in order to locate the part to get in Monday?
Finally , i'm wanting to put a new thermostat as the one that is there seems not to be closing properly (temp sits on the 70'sº on normal usage)
Any advice regarding brands to choose / avoid?

Quick update - there's no update yet as my friend that is going to have a look at the car and (hopefully) fix it , didn't hat the time yet. Has been a week away from my baby - tough times :(
Anyway , i just hope is no part that is NFP...
About the retrofitting of a water level sensor in the X7 , i've seen (among other stuff) this video :
Did anyone already did something like this?
I still dont believe that citroen fitted a stupid windscreen washer level warning and not a (much more important) coolant level sensor - Shame on you Citroen...
But well , i intend to correct that , and ideas / solutions are welcome

They often don't use actual level sensors on the basis that if the system gets too hot then there is likely a coolant leak. So you'll get the temperature gauge markings shown on the instrument panel as segments, as well as the warning light and the STOP lamp with a message.

Here are the values for triggering on your X7 with DW10CTED4 engine:
DesignationTemperature Threshold
Temperature threshold (For illumination of the "STOP" warning light on the instrument panel)118 °C
Temperature threshold (For extinguishing the "STOP" warning light on the instrument panel)115 °C
Cut-in threshold ( electric cooling fan unit - Low speed)97 °C
Triggering threshold ( electric cooling fan unit - Low speed)95 °C
Cut-in threshold ( electric cooling fan unit - High-speed)105 °C
Triggering threshold ( electric cooling fan unit -High-speed)103 °C
Air conditioning cut-off temperatureExterior temperature below 3°C
Air conditioning re-engagement temperatureExterior temperatures above 4,5°C
Please note, I'm no longer active on the Forum, so won't respond to messages.

Thanks for the answer , Marc.
But if the leak is too big , can happen that the temperature sensor gets "out of the water" , and the engine just melts without any temperature warning?
I'd still prefer to have a water level sensor. That way the car could be stopped before bigger damage is done.
Anyway , the C5 still not in the road as the problem was one tube and an engine seal (Unsure if that's the correct word , but are those metal seals that cover the holes on the engine coolant circuit.)
The ones in the back the engine are hard to reach , so the engine was taken out in order to be repaired.
Can post a pic if it's not understandable what part is.
Thermostat will also be changed as mine was stuck open.

As an (late) update to this post, the C5 is now perfected and a coolant leak will not get me off guard again. It has now what the engineers should have kept from previous version

Don't ask me for installation details, as it was a friend installing it. All i know is that it works like it was from factory, even warning in the display (it seems thet the ecu was ready to have that sensor fitted ! Duck you citroen)

All the 7 spheres were put to original pressures too :)
