Xantia 4HP14:I surrender. Suggestions for manual conversion?

Unread post by octinum »

It's been almost 2 years since I took the Xantia in storage for the broken transmission. Sadly, I couldn't find any transmission shops in Ankara that would accept working on it. Even ZF themselves said "we can't work even on 5-gear ones, let alone 4HP- ones". That's partly due to my insisting on them doing their job right though. The transmission was supposedly rebuilt around 70k kilometers ago. Turns out, they just replaced the brakes and bands etc., but not the sealing components at the time.

It's a 1997 X1 2.0i (121hp) VSX with H2 suspension, leather seats with power seats at the front. The hydraulics are working fine. It would be a shame to send it to the junkyard. So I thought I'd have it converted to manual. Of course, not enough sources for knowledge in Turkey -people who don't call it "air suspension" in Turkey are hard to come by. :)

My research suggests I should go for the BE3 transmission, but there will be other components like the flywheel, clutch hydraulics, and all kinds of possible housing mismatchs from size and shape to bolt locations. I am looking for a donor car.

I am wondering if anybody could help me with a list of donor cars to target for a relatively easy conversion? Expanding the selection list would be incredibly helpful for me.

Would it not be simpler to fit another auto box and save all the major clutch install? :)
I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure!
I used to ride on two wheels, but now I need all four!

Only the Xantia V6 was fitted with the ZF 4HP20 transmission, the smaller engines were fitted with the ZF 4HP14 until 1997, then the Seimans AL4 from 1998.

The 4HP14 is a pure hydro-mechanical box with no electronic controls. This actually makes them harder to rebuild, as tolerances must be adjusted mechanically, rather than having adaptive software in an ECU.

For a manual conversion, any PSA vehicle with the same engine should be OK, but the clutch pedal mechanism should come from a Xantia as Peugeot models have a different brake system and pedal box.

Apologies! Of course it is 4HP14! I was researching the possibility of fitting the 4HP20 for better availability in Turkey. Thank you all for answers.

Unfortunately, old auto transmissions in working order are almost impossible to find in Turkey, and Turkish import restrictions prohibit importing one. A Xantia friend in Europe actually has offered a never used 4HP14 for a very good price, but it is impossible for me to import it (anything you can't carry in your pocket/luggage and/or exceeding $30 including shipping fees is practically prohibited in Turkey). Hence, I'm being offered heavily used transmissions, most likely imported illegally, for 2000 Euros.

@xantia_v6 I see, so I go looking for any PSA with the 2.0i 8v engine, and the clutch pedal mechanism from a Xantia. Does this mean any Xantia with the manual transmission? I mean, assume I get the gearbox, flywheel, and other components except the clutch mechanism from, say, a Peugeot, and found a clutch pedal mechanism from a MY2000 (X2) manual Xantia with a diesel engine. Would it work?

You would need a clutch pedal assembly and cable from a Xantia with a BE3 transmission, as the ML5 transmission had a hydraulic clutch actuator.

I am not sure if 4HP14 driveshafts are compatible with BE3, but it is something else to check.

A Peugeot 405 would be a good transmission donor if you can find one.

Thank you! Hunt for Peugeot 405 begins then.
Actually, I just found an alternative, A 1994 2.0 SX 121hp (it says 123 in the ad but that's I believe what it is branded in Turkey) with manual transmission. but they are selling the car as a whole. I need some place to store the rest of the car after the transplant. I believe this is the best option, which would also bring me the driveshafts and all.
