It's not my garden Husky, my mate's and from the first picture you can see that it is separated from Elstree Aerodrome by a tree/hedge line!! Makes for an interesting soundtrack during the day as their Helicopter School is literally only 50m away!!

Looking professional there Mick with the Birds-mouth cuts, on some of the rafters but not on the squarer rafters - obviously to get the top of the rafters level, for the roof covering but what’s the reason for the different rafter sizes ?

Don’t get too technical I’m not making my own house or anything just always like to understand the reasons for the methods used in construction.

The whole building is supplied in kit form with the notches already cut. The beams are fully supported by the posts and aligned with the 3D steel brackets on the top of each post. I assume they are left un-notched so the full width of the beam is supported by the post rather than partial as it would be if they were notched. Not being a chippy myself I can't really add any more than that.

We had to bale out from the build today as the day was set aside long ago for my DofE student to come and help me clear the loft during her half term and her Dad, the man from Elstree, brought her and helped as well. As a result we got the whole loft cleared and moved into the temporary warehouse I have set up in the garage. Once they had gone SWMBO and I set about sorting through the stuff and crammed her car to the gunnels for 2 consecutive dump runs. After removing that obvious load of junk we now have to sort through the remaing clobber to decide keep, charity shop or dump!!:

Once all that is clear I am going to use the tables as flooring in the part of the loft which is still rafter and insulation only!!

Needless to say it is an asap job as SWMBO wants her garage back before the frosts arrive!!

Good work there Mick Once I'm back to full health, my loft will be similarly dealt with...

I'm hoping I can soon at least get up there as |I have a drippy bathroom tap and need to get up there to turn off the water so I can sort it...

My drippy tap has fixed itself
Just waiting for the gas man to cometh, due at 08:00.

The loft will remain a tip for the foreseeable future, most of the junk there isn't mine.

No, mentioned elsewhere that my gas was turned off three months ago. Will be nice to have some heating and hot water again, was 3.7°C during the night here.

Oh Steve, that's terrible Even down here in the balmy south-east I've had my heating on for several weeks now.

I'd have died of hypothermia by now without it. But then, I do feel the cold...

Significant progress today saw a lot of sorting followed by a full load to the charity shops and a second full load to the recycling centre, so now it looks like this:

We are not doing Christmas this year Paul, too much ill health around SWMBO's family with THREE under cancer treatment and 2 more with other issues, hence the family has taken the decision to give it all a miss so nobody is disappointed!! Great news for me because I hate it anyway, my past life is full of Christmas tragedies so I'll be happy when the whole period is over!!

Sorry to hear that Mick and I understand totally. My best advice, and what I'm vague planning to do this year, is to go away and hide somewhere for the duration. We twice spent Christmas in a Center Parcs when the girls were little. An awesome way to hide from the worst of the festive season... There was enough snowfall to make it very magical when we stayed in the Lake District one.
