The old nail C5 X7 needs about £1500 ish spent on it all in...I can't do it and includes labour from the guy I use. It's new parts apart from the rack.
Steering rack...recon
Front tyres and tracking
Back shocks (both to be safe) and maybe pipes
And front suspension settled.
As he said too, seriously think about it, 15 years old nearly 200000 miles, wouldn't be me unless it has been in the family since new or dam near it.

Re: Would you spend this amount on it
I'm very biased on this topic, but personally, yes I would. Honestly, for the work listed, that price sounds like a bargain if your mechanic actually knows what they're doing.
Of course it all depends on your financial situation and how much you actually like the car. Even if you don't want the car (and can afford the repairs), you could get it fixed and then list it for sale for 2-2.5k on Autotrader, Gumtree or Ebay. That way you've got more chance of someone grabbing it than the small collection of regulars on this forum.
As an aside, context is crucial for readers not in the know. Yours is a 3L diesel, not a run-of-the-mill 1.6 or 2L. That tidbit makes a difference.

Re: Would you spend this amount on it
I can afford it but really not willing, yes the guy I use is great have used him for 10 years.
I like it but not enough I don't think to spend that as a first bill plus being a saloon i should never have wasted time going to see it never mind buy it.
3.0 exclusive or not it would never make anywhere near even £2000 not at the age and especially mileage.

No I would not..... I might offer it as a spares car rather than scrap it however.....I know a few Land Rover guys who would love that engine as well

Re: Would you spend this amount on it
Having just read Davids description of the car......~
WHY would you want to replace BOTH rear struts.....Struts are NOT shock absorbers.....doing so is TOTALLY unnecessary ...the "guy you use" is talking b******s and should not be advising people about such cars !!
What is wrong with the S-rack ?
Whoever is telling you such this is wrong (gas struts/rack/etc....it is a Hydractive 3+ car)

Re: Would you spend this amount on it
Doesn't matter as can't be bothered with it and selling or scrapping it I should never have got it. I have my health issues and an elderly mother with dementia to deal with and the last thing need is a piece of French junk I should never have got a i said before.

Stu, you might want to keep an eye on this, just to give you a feel for what you may get: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/197796131145 ... &recoPos=1
I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure!

Re: Would you spend this amount on it
elderly mother with dementia....you are not alone in that duty (95 years). I do that entirely on my own (no carers/wife/family etc) and have done for 7 years. I know the stain only to well.
BUT......The car is not junk is it, you are just upset and do not understand how the car you have works. Do not worry about that, many people do not, as is shown by "the guy" advising you.
From what I gather you have a car with ONE rear strut that needs replacing because it leaks. Due to that leak in the system you have some LDS to pour in to a tank to replace that which has leaked out causing the front suspension to sink (which may very well also solve your steering rack issue).
Waste your money if you want but that seems a shame............

Re: Would you spend this amount on it
I know how it works or have a good idea, I can't be bothered with it and wish I hadn't got it as I said before. The guy use simply said like discs etc be as well replacing in pairs as known my luck the other side would "go" soon after that's all. Neil is a VERY competent guy and said when I went to see him "what are you doing with that and a saloon are you mad".
I know what you say about topping up the lds, the thing is, the front isn't sinking/low it's high and won't sit normal. Yes the steering might become ok with a new back shock and the fluid topped up who knows. It probably is the way I am feeling etc but I honestly wish I hadn't wasted my time getting it.

Re: Would you spend this amount on it
My hat comes to you, you will no doubt be healthier and stronger etc than me though, I didn't realise how difficult is is plus she sends quite a few of the carers away and doesn't let in saying she is fine etc. It is taking its toll on me.Stickyfinger wrote: 25 Oct 2025, 17:08 elderly mother with dementia....you are not alone in that duty (95 years). It does not work like that with Citroen "struts"......he IS thinking like a "normal mechanic".... I would urge you strongly to ignore that advice and just get the single strut replaced.
Such advice makes me concerned that he does not know the very basics about the cars.....For example I bet he has already lifted the car with all 4x wheels hanging without depressurizing the suspension and removing the LDS cap before doing that hanging...(1st clue I use to asses
the front isn't sinking/low it's high and won't sit normal.
Top up the tank (till you just see the level at the BOTTOM of the inner filter, NO MORE than that, with LHM,............ select low, allow the car to settle.................turn the steering left right without holding it at max about 5 times, let it idle for a minute...........................select high/low 5x and allow to settle for 30secs between each...............select low, idle, select normal.
That will bleed the suspension and the rack and should correct both.
Persist and you will have the most comfortable car you have ever owned !!!!
Good luck with your mother....ask if you need some advice

Thanks you Alasdair for explaining that, belive me Neil is a VERY knowledgeable mechanic he did text earlier and said he forgot it was Hydra3 etc and yes just replace the bad one but but also check the sphere and pipes.
No he hasn't had it up on the ramps yet he only looked round it. But I am sure he knows what to do but if he not goes online to see, just the same as you or me. He did said nice but isn't you.
I read what you said regarding the bleeding sequence etc. If (and is only if) i did get a new shock. The one I saw was on ebay and £200 from Poland I think and was a genuine item and got it fitted and did the bleed sequence and the steering was still notchy stiff etc that would mean then a new one wouldn't it.
I did see recons from the steering superstore in Horbury Bridge for £300. Only thing is they want your rack to recondition it and send it back. Neil doesn't have the space for a car sitting for a week or more in his unit i don't think.
I understand you saying if I persist i would have a very comfortable car and yes you are right. Even now it's still ok, a bit floaty but ok. But it's the fact that i really don't need the high tax 3.0 twin turbo diesel saloon.
Thank you regarding my mother's situation, I will indeed ask but may pm and via here.

Slip of the fingers there I'm sure. All C5s with wet suspension use LDS.
