2.0 bluehdi 130 clicking/tapping sound, is this a problem?
Just got a Peugeot Boxer with 100.000 on the clock. Engine is 2016 2.0 bluehdi 130 (PSA DW10). Previously has had services done on time, next one is in half a year.
When I tried the car out before buying I thought the engine sounded fine but a few days later after driving it home it seems to me it's making a clicking or rattling noise, which follows the revs of the engine.
The sound seems louder when engine is idling, and perhaps got a bit less loud as it warmed up properly.
Can anyone tell me what is making this sound? And does it indicate that there is a problem with the engine? Do I need to take it to a mechanic?
I would really appreciate any help, thanks a lot.

Noises like that can come from many places and it's difficult to tell from a video as you need more focussed listening such as with a stethoscope. It sounds chain clattery to me but I think that engine has a timing belt so maybe camshaft orientated?
I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure!

Thanks for the input! Then I'm of course wondering if I should take it to a mechanic right away so they can have a look. Do you think I need to do that or is that also too hard to say from a video?

I would advise that you get a real life professional opinion to be on the safe side

That sounds bad.... I think this engine might have a cam chain in the head to drive a second cam, and it sounds to me like it's in trouble. Needs looking at ASAP before it becomes more serious (expensive...!). I'd avoid driving it.

Ouch, that is not good to hear. I will definitely take it to a mechanic on Monday.
Thanks for responding. Can I ask how you listened to the video? Because to me it sounds quite different whether it is on phone speaker or with proper speakers like headphones.

Listened on both phone and computer...still sounds bad!
Here's a video which looks like the same engine (blue connectors on the nearside, pipe running across to the top of the engine) - watch from about 10min on. You can see the chain through the oil filler, you should be able to check and see if the chain is loose.

Thank you very much for the reply, I really appreciate it. I will go look and try it.
This is my first encounter with a timing chain - how do I know if it's loose or not? Is it about moving to the sides or about tension (should I try to "pull" it to see if it's tight?)?
I could also crank it and record a video of the chain.

It should be tight, if you can wiggle it up and down on the sprocket it's loose.

Re: 2.0 bluehdi 130 clicking sound when idling, is this a problem?
Thanks! It can move about 1mm from side to side. I will try to remove the cover above so I can check the tension.
Also, it seems to me that the noise from the previous videos come more from the opposite side of the engine. The chain is also making a sound which is audible when the oil filler cap is off but I don't know if this is normal friction.

I can lift the chain a bit, not a lot but it does move.
Here is a video, can you tell from that?

Re: 2.0 bluehdi 130 clicking/tapping sound, is this a problem?
I went to not one but two mechanics today, they each have a short listen and both said that everything is fine! The second one was at a peugeot service center, he said that it sounds like a valve is "snorting" a bit but that it was nothing to worry about.
I think it sounds different on the audio I recorded, so that's a lesson learned, videos can be useful but not for this
Thanks a lot for the help anyway, I really appreciate it!

Hydralic tappets can make the same noise ,the chain movement don't look to bad to be honest, and also the injectors can make that sound too, 100k injector cleaning time id say . If its needing a servce Maybe time to change the oil ? Ot sounds top end , are all the idler pulleys ok ?

Re: 2.0 bluehdi 130 clicking/tapping sound, is this a problem?
Thank you for the reply!
It is time to change to oil, I will do that this week, but next service is not up until August.
Injector cleaning time - do you mean just an additive or the full job of taking them out and cleaning?
If the idler pulleys are okay - I couldn't say, I just got the car so am just learning everything now. Is it something I can check myself?
But about the sound, I am feeling much better about after two mechanics listened and said it was nothing. I really think this recording I made distorted the sound.
So if there is no immediate problem I guess it's more about giving it the proper maintenance. Will contact the shop where the previous owner had it serviced the last two times and see if can get a service history.

Use a well known additive and only at the dose it states.
