bolts for alloy and steel rim

Unread post by Martin3008 »

Hi Everyone,

I have winter and summer alloy wheels for my Peugeot and I have no issues with interchanging them(bolts are fine).
The problem is that I have purchased a spare wheel size 16 which is from steel (not alloy) and I would like to know if i need 4 different bolts for it ?
As far as i understood from checking the forum the bolts for alloy and steel wheels are different:
https://frenchcarforum.co.uk/forum/view ... p?p=699749

From the above thread i found a link to purchase such bolts:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/124088156983

I am not sure if they are the correct ones for my car. Would it be possible to check and let me know exact product code i would need to be looking for or size or even better link ?
Here is my VIN: VF3**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff]

Thank you in advanced

I do not have access to Vin number decoding at the moment so could you specify your model, gearbox and engine size? :)
Alternatively you could use the contact form on this site to find the correct bolts: https://peugeot-accessories.co.uk/wheel-bolt-1692647680 :)
I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure!
I used to ride on two wheels, but now I need all four!

See my post here https://frenchcarforum.co.uk/forum/view ... 86#p829886

If the bolt has the taper then it will also fit a steel wheel.

Thanks Paul,

I suppose i need to be looking for either:
540572 or 540567 ? (or some other part number)
Just wanted to confirm exactly which bolts are for steel wheels.

Thanks in advanced

I don't know what part number is correct for the alloy wheel but, as I said, if your alloy wheel bolt has the taper then it will also fit the steel wheel. If you have enough bolts for the alloy wheels and they have the taper why are looking for extra bolts?

Be aware that for some models, the steel spare wheel specified for a car with alloy wheels has special washers on the bolt holes to match the alloy wheel bolts.

Yes, Xantia wheels are bad for that mix.....also the length of the threaded part can be shorter on some than others....

That sounds like the type of spare wheel that was supplied with our Mk1 C5 which had alloy wheels. From memory that had washers on the bolt holes and I'm pretty sure those had a taper on them to match the one on the alloy wheels bolts..

This spare wheel had the same size tyre fitted as the road wheels so there was no speed restriction on the car if you had to fit it after a puncture. The other important thing to know is that the spare wheel wasn't made of steel but pressed alloy. And this is why the washers were there; to provide reinforcement on the stress point where the wheel bolts mate up. The washers aren't there to turn a wheel into a special type to use parallel shank alloy wheel bolts. They're there so that a standard tapered wheel bolt would mate up as well as strengthening the hole.
