That's a common feature of all modern cars I find - driven more by the fact that they match the dash to where the window lines are, which are higher on the bodyline now for better crash protection.

It's their 'design age' that determines it, rather than the pure age of the car. A newer design will tend to have it.

Similarly dashboards have got much much deeper over time. That's not just because of the amount of equipment behind them going up, but also for crash protection (crush zone/soft material between passenger compartment and engine).

And if you make the body deeper and the greenhouse on top smaller, you can have a bigger luggage boot (trunk) without any weird steps in the side view. I wonder if metal is cheaper than safety glass, probably lighter too, so that might influence designers thoughts.
