Sutton bank was always a great place. We used to go there to watch the gliders.

Interesting Steve, swap a G for an S and you have one of our favourite spectator sports while marshalling on the RAC in the 70s, the sliders!! :-D

One of my prompts yesterday as my brother is going the Helmsley today and I saw that some of the roads were closed, including Sutton bank, which is between Helmsley and Thirsk. But of course he can't use Sutton bank as he is dragging a 200' caravan. Seems like it is that long anyway.

Just had a thought, I think one of my granddaughters works in Thirsk. Going to see her mother shortly and will ask.

Apparently you used to be able to hire the tug-o-war team to pull your caravan up the bank but they gave it up because it was too Thirsky work!! :sulk:

Sutton Bank is closed all this week for its annual maintenance and in the BBC article it says on average 120 good vehicles a year do not make it to the top and need police help - they must be the tug of war team. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c62l5qqdxq5o

A bit late but thought that I would tack this on here as there are some bits you may like to explore if you repeat the Beamish trip.
It was originally destined to the "Bridge Too Far" but that bit is too short, also I thought it was going to be the Newport Bridge that features in another story for another time.

A County Durham tourist attraction became the backdrop for a popular TV show, as TV viewers may have seen familiar sights if they tuned in to the latest episode.

Beamish Museum in County Durham became the setting for scenes in the sixth series of Channel 5’s All Creatures Great and Small.
