Starting Problem and Persistent ABS/ESP Communication Error (Citroën C4 Picasso II, 2016)

Unread post by lc8blacks »

Hello everyone! I'm new here.
I own a 2016 Citroën C4 Picasso MK2 1.6 BlueHDI 120 ETA6 S&S VIN VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff] and recently experienced an unusual starting issue.

Description of the Failure
A few days ago, after stopping the car for just one minute, I tried to restart it, but it wouldn't fire up.
  • The dashboard looked completely normal (no odd warning lights before attempting to start).
  • The engine did not turn over/crank.
  • I was able to roll up the windows and eventually had to tow the car home.
Initial Diagnosis and Steps Taken
When I first connected my diagnostic tool (Diagbox), the car initially showed multiple errors, including a loss of communication with the gearbox (ETA6). After several start attempts, it entered economy mode.

1. Battery Check: I suspected the battery might be the cause. I tried replacing it with a new one, but the problem persisted, so I returned it.
2. Current Battery Status: The original battery is now fully recharged and shows a voltage of 12.73V.
3. Current Diagnosis (Diagbox): I managed to exit economy mode and clear all fault codes, but one error persists:
  • Communication Fault with the ABS/ESP Module.
The Question
Considering that the car will not start and the only persistent fault is the loss of communication with the ABS/ESP, what is the most likely cause? Where should I begin checking (fuses, wiring harness, specific module location)?

The first thing to do is a BSI reset following the procedure in the link below. Then start the car allow it to run for 5 minutes and then rescan with diagbox to see what faults are there. Report back here for further advice once you have started from that base line. :)

I have performed the suggested steps, but the problem persists, and the car will not start/crank.
I connected Diagbox again and got the following persistent error codes:
  • BSI (Body Service Interface 2010)
1. U1F00 00 Defect event not recorded in the fault log[/list]
2. B180E 87 Hands-free remote control authentication fault (not present in the ECU).
3. B1715 64 Incoherence fault between vehicle locking status and front right door lock status.
4. B1716 64 Incoherence fault between vehicle locking status and front left door lock status.
  • Engine Control Unit (ECU) – EDC17C60
1. P242F 00 Particulate Filter Clogging
(NOTE: This is a long-standing fault since the car passed 185,000 km; current mileage is 204,000 km. Unlikely to be the cause of the non-start issue.)
  • ABS/ESP (Anti-lock Braking System / Electronic Stability Program) Communication Fault
  • Automatic/Pilot-Operated Gearbox (ETA6)
1. P160E 01 Positive supply after ignition (Ignition cut off)

I am attaching the original PDF from DiagBox for reference in spanish
What do you suggest I review?

I am afraid I don't understand Spanish and my translator won't work on PDF files. Hopefully someone else will be able to offer some help. :)
