Megane scenic 1.6i not starting, help

Unread post by Mosser »

My wifes R reg Renault Megane Scenic 1.6i with 75k on the clock wont start, when the ignition key is turned on i can hear a fast clicking sound and it is comming from the brown relay under the bonnet marked as the starter relay, if i pull this relay out it stops clicking but still wont start (obviously!!) as soon as i put the relay back it starts clicking again and the starter wont turn over at all, the oil pressure light and handbrake warning light as flickering in time with the clicking and these usually go out whilst the engine is being turned over anyway,
Has anyone heard of anything similar happening and a fix for it ?, its not battery voltage related as i have charged it up overnight and when checking with a meter it measures 13.2 volts and only drops to 12.9 with the ingition on and no lower when i'm turning it to the engine start position
Anyone offer any suggestions or advice or help ?
Cheers

Ok, here's the next odd thing, the battery is under the drivers seat on this car, and if i connect up a jump start pack to the positive connection point under the bonnet, it starts and runs fine, the alternator is putting out nearly 15 volts and everything if fine until i disconnect the starter pack, it then starts to misfire slightly and the ECU fault lamp on the dash flashes but if i hold the revs at 2000 then its all fine again until i drop it back to idle, if i stop the engine again with the jump start pack disconnected it again wont start and the starter relay starts clicking like mad, if i reconnect the jump start pack yet again, the fuel pump primes the system and the start relay stops clicking and it starts properly again,
Am i right in assuming this is something to do with a loose earth do you think ?, or might it be something else ?

Ok, next thing along my fault finding path is that i now find that when i use the engine for me earth point for voltage measurements, it is 2 volts lower than anywhere else including the chassis, this leads me to believe that the engine earth strap in corroded or loose,
I would check tighten and grease it, but the trouble is that i cant find the sodding thing !!!, anyone got any ideas where it might be ?
Feel free to post on this thread if you have got any info at all that might be releavent, all help appreciated !

Right, i've had it up in the air, checked everywhere and there isnt any earth strap that i can find anywhere linking the engine to the chassis,
It recently went in to our local garage for some work on the exhaust and manifold and an MOT with new front tyres being fitted, is it likely that they removed the strap and forgot to put it back on ?,
And...., can i just link any part of the engine to any part of the chassis as an engine earth point ?, or does it have to be in a specific place ?

Ok, earth screw was well and truly stuck, it was using a big security head and i didnt have the right one and now it isnt the right shape, why they couldnt have used a simple 10mm bolt i do not know, although that would have probably made things too easy then !!,
I have now run a new earth between the chassis and a convenient bolt on the engine that was only holding a metal bracket on and it works perfectly now,
I do want to stil sort out the real earth sometime, so if somewhen knows where the earth wire attaches to the chassis can they post on here, the engine earth point it halfway up the back of the engine, probably the silliest place to put it as its really difficult to get to behind the driveshaft

If it isn't a silly question, why bother to sort out the "real earth" when it has failed and is more or less inaccessible? You've just made a good "real" earth.
