Imgur geoblocking

Unread post by Zelandeth »

Just a heads up for anyone who used Imgur to host their images in threads. As of a day or two ago their services are now blocked in the UK, and you'll simply see a big purple box placeholder.

Hopefully the facility to upload images directly that we have will negate that issue for our postiings. :)

For some background, see https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c4gzxv5gy3qo

I will attempt to recover the imagur images that are linked from this forum and dynamically relink them so that they display normally, but I need to do some maintenance on the scripts first.

I have run the scripts to update our local image cache, and all previously posted imagur images should now be visible to all users.

Any images posted in the future will only be cached when I manually run the scripts again, which is not done on any predictable schedule.

If I understand that Mike does that mean that posting via Imgur will not display at the time, only when you have run the cache? In other words hopefully when a member previews their post they should see it doesn't come up and then maybe use our embedding facility instead? :)

Not necessarily. If the poster is not in the UK then they might see their post as they want it to be. I suppose it might also depend on where our server is hosted and what location it reports for itself.
