C3 Petrol misfire

Unread post by Neptune »

The engine runs fine until run warm for approximately 10 mins. Misfire starts on cylinder 2 radiator fan switches on error message anti pollution fault. Removing f17 radiator fan fuse misfire clears and remains clear. Plugs, injectors and coils have been replaced. Testing with oscilloscope indicates number 2 injector is switched off. The engine has done 86k and burns a little oil. Compression all good.

Have you used a code reader to see what fault code is stored when the anti pollution message appeared and presumably the engine management light came on - if so what code do you get ?

When were the spark plugs last replaced ?

What year is the car and is it a vti engine ? These are known to use oil, our 1.4 vti used it all the time we had it, bought at 12k miles.

Yes, we need to know the engine type! What are the 6th,7th and 8th characters of the VIN, if you don't know the engine type.
The year of manufacture is important too.

So you are saying that the the misfires go away and the engine runs perfectly if you remove fuse F17? Is that correct?

Depending on the engine, the injectors, the ignition coil pack and the O2 sensor heaters are all on the same circuit. So it could be a power supply fault. But we need more info!

Thanks for your replies.... the plugs were replaced in the last month. The engine is a 1.6 petrol (prince) 5fw.
It was manufactured 2009
Yes when the misfire starts after switching off and removing fuse f17 (radiator fan) then restarting the engine runs perfectly.

5FW is a vti engine. What mileage has yours done, these are known for timing chain wear, our C3 vti needed a new one at about 50k miles and started giving a fault code about timing.

Where is the F17 fuse located ? I have looked in a handbook for the C3 and for the C3 Picasso model up to 2009 and for the one from 2009 and neither list a fuse F17 radiator fan in the engine or dash fuse boxes.

If you have not yet done, you need to use a code reader to see what fault code is being given since this will help.

Apologies, the fuse is f21 located in the engine bay next to the battery.
The only fault code is p1338 misfire cylinder 2
I already have suspicions of timing chain wear as it's done 86000 miles.

Have a read of this topic which had the same fault code and symptoms, it turned out in this case after spending a lot of money replacing lots of things it was just the camshaft sensors that were at fault. 2 of these will not cost that much so should be the first things to replace. https://www.peugeotforums.com/threads/2 ... es.347988/

On our vti C3 I had to replace a camshaft sensor since it was coming up with a fault code and that directly pointed to a sensor so was obvious.
