Dentist charges

I have come to the conclusion private dentists must be one of the highest chargers in the UK, more than solicitors possibly. Our dentist went private last year and we had little choice but to stay with them being no NHS ones left. Last week I had 2 fillings, a clean and check up so nothing special and the total cost was about £470 for 1 hours work. If NHS it would have been about £70 and I did not notice anything different to when I had the same things done by the same dentist when she was NHS. They are part of the Rodericks dental group who boast they have over 200 practices and are in the top 6 dental groups for profits. To stay with the dentist they insisted we had a monthly payment plan to cover the check up so another company making profits out of patients.

Today our daughter saw another private dentist after her own private one said she needed a specialist to do a root canal filling. Just paid £80 for the inspection and wants £800 for the filling in a few weeks. After seeing her the dentist rushed out and drove off in an expensive Porsche. We know somebody whose daughter and husband are both dentists who went private and were told they earn that much money they do not know what to do with it so went part time.

I need to sort out a dentist, not seen one for over ten years. He was crap so never went back.

Totally agree Paul, diabolical, which is why I have purchased all my own dental equipment and like the cars it's a diy job. Admittedly it will not be as good perhaps but I am happy to have strong teeth and a gap or two where things went awry in the past. I cannot remember the last time I actually saw a dentist having had a childhood of agony and misadventure with 'school dentists' I vowed to avoid them at all costs!! I have probably saved enough to buy my own Porsche if I wanted but I don't like them either!!

Unlike you Mick, I inherited less than good teeth and in the past I've had to have a lot of dental work carried out at great expense.

I've been private since forever and for the past few years I've paid out for dental insurance cover. It's not exactly cheap but nicely shields me from any huge costs that may happen... I get two check-ups per year and any work that is needed from that. I also get two hygienist sessions although I'm so good with my dental care these days I no longer need them. My teeth ae genetically not good and I have to take huge care of them.

Sod's law had seen that for most of the time I've been covered by insurance I've not needed anything major done. Such is the way with any insurance policy...

I don't begrudge any dentist even one penny of what they earn. Would you like to spend all your working days staring into people's mouths and dealing with their manky teeth? Yep, thought so...

Prompted by daughter going to a new dentist today and paying £110 for a first consultation

I have been looking for a new dentist for most of the year since having a few twinges in January.
Other expenses kept pushing that into the background until I realised that the twinges are no more so looking for a dentist shelved for now; procrastination wins again!

Last dentist visit was to the dental hospital as my dentist had retired about 10~12 years ago.

Reminds me, I have a check-up on the 6th November... I had to see the dentist briefly last month... Trouble with my gums...

Turns out I was brushing too often and too vigorously!
