steve
The Car Is Citroen Xantia 2 ltr manual/petrol 1993
The problem is its pinking really bad especially when changing gears,it struggles as though its running out of petrol going up small incline but picks up speed when road levels of,or go,s down hill it also sounds really harsh ,and erratic on tickover, have made sure it isnt petrol by putting 3 gallons in,today and it didnt make no difference.the engine was really quiet now it sounds like tractor
engine.also did find water around inside of petrol filler cap when i put petrol in.

Is it an 8 or 16v model?
If it is 16 valves, then your ignition coils may have died. It happened to mine last year and got them replaced for £38 each. Same symptoms.

At least on both of front doors there might be a sign 2.0i in case of 8 valves or 2.0i 16V if your Xantia has 2.0 engine wtih 16 valves. Hope this will help you!
