Felix Reeves the Daily Express dick head posted this headline: "Electric car fire rates could soar amid fresh warning of 'explosions' and 'toxic chemicals'"
Then if you read the story below the headline it says:
Data from the United States National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) shows that electric cars experience around 25 fires per 100,000 vehicles sold.
Meanwhile, petrol and diesel vehicles average around 1,530 fires per 100,000, meaning internal combustion engine vehicles are around 61 times more likely to catch fire.
Other research from the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency shows there have been just 23 fire incidents involving electric cars out of its total fleet of 611,000 EVs. This represents just 0.004 per cent.

Re: Those EV fires.
Probably less likely to catch fire than your phone.
The problem is that in either case (EV or phone) the fire is almost impossible to extinguish.

Ah ! statistics.........
I'm afraid it's somewhat worthless looking at the base statistics quoted by Gibbo as they don't really tell much of a story..... or rather, they can be manipulated to tell whatever story you wish - which is a greater part of any statistics 'job'
The article's statistics as quoted is doing a good job of comparing apples with oranges.
It's unfair to use the relatively 'new' fleet of EV's (and their associated thermal incidents) against every ICE vehicle that's ever been produced and may or may not still be on the road - I think I've delved into these statistics before and found that was the issue - though to be fair, these could be 'new' statistics and the misleading bits have been removed. To be a fair comparison, I suppose you should only take a sample of every EV and every ICE vehicle sold over (say) the last ten years to be able to compare apples with apples, and even then it's a skewed story as are you wishing to look at every 'thermal incident' whether it be a spontaneous combustion or a crash and burn or a user error or a combination of all ? And do youi limit it only to cars, or do you include buses and commercials ? And what side of the fence do PHEVs sit on ? What do you wish to determine as a 'bad' fire and what do you wish to determine as an 'acceptable' fire ?

You can bet you bottom dollar, that he who rules the world (well he thinks he does), will change those statistics and either include or blame the 'Windmills' , it's always the Windmills!
