The 101 beat me, when reversing, the passenger had to hold it gear, by hand to start, then using their foot!
What was your first car and first repair you did to it.

Interesting you should say that Husky, a chap up the road has to keep his screen turned off when reversing the car with his wife. With the camera active she kept yelling out Careful!! Mind That! etc etc..I offered to wire in a relay to cut the screen when the reversing lights were powered up but he said he was happy just pressing the nav button which apparently forces the screen to display the map, not the camera output
(No great surprise, he drives an Audi A6 I think it is)

My first car was a mk1 Polo when I was 18. 1st job was a head gasket.
I had bikes from 17. 1st bike was a Suzuki GP100. Bought with no MOT. Did the work then went for a 1 mile ride round the block, MOT booked for the next day, got pulled. No tax, no MOT. The Police let my off the no MOT because when I produced my documents it was taxed and MOTed. Swansea, however, took me to court for the tax. Their computer showed it hadn't been taxed for 9 months. I'd only owned it for a 10 days and tax was 10 squid a year. Had the morning off 6th Form, showed the judge my V5 which proved my ownership. I had bought it in the previous month. Dressed very smart and was very polite. She fined me £10 and that included the 83p back tax for the previous month. You could hear the sighs ans sniggers in the court room.

Re: What was your first car and first repair you did to it.
Talking of wipers and washers, my mother bought a new Mk1 Ford Capri 1300GT XL. It had a squashy button on the floor for the washers. There was an option on a better specced car for a squashy button with a metal ring which would then operated the wipers all in one go. Didn't make any difference to my mother who didn't use the washers anyway but I enjoyed it.
Incidentally one front wing had an XL badge and the other had an XLR badge. Soon rectified with a new XLR badge.
And, talking of facilities never used, in later years my mother bought a Toyota Corolla. In all the time she owned it she never went into 5th gear, only ever 4th!

Only a couple of years ago I discovered SWMBO had no idea that she had front foglights until I was walking round checking the lights with her in the driver's seat doing the switching. "Sides? OK, Dip? OK, Main? OK, Indicate left? OK, Indicate right? OK, Fogs? - Where's the switch?...........!!!"

I forgot to say in my earlier post the insurance on the Austin 10 was £7.00 third party for the year.

I had a mate with a Vauxhall Cresta with vacuum wipers. Complete rubbish when driving slowly and parking.
That said, mine on the current Mazda went doolally and it is in to have them fixed.

Aah, vacuum wipers. That's a complete OT in itself. My father's Ford Consul had them and I remember him struggling up hills in the pouring rains as they craaaaaaawled across the scree. And then going down the other side they tried to beat themselves to death!

Re: What was your first car and first repair you did to it.
My first major repair was in 1956 was on my 1939 Ford Prefect, lost 2nd gear, took the top off the gearbox and found that the thrust washer that retained the gear on the shaft had broken, replaced it for very little money and had 3 gears again. WARNING if this happens to you don't put it in reverse, the gear slides down the shaft and locks it in reverse!
My last gearbox repair (and probably will be) was on my sons Ford ranger several years ago lost 5th gear, there was no way I could lift the gearbox so he and a mate deposited it in my bench, I split the box and transfer box, and guess what fell out - a broken 5th gear thrust washer. A fitting finale I thought.

Re: What was your first car and first repair you did to it.
My first repair on a vehicle was well before I owned 1. As a before and after teen I volunteered at Duxford and did aircraft restoration etc. After that I went to college and did mechanics 1 day a week, and the rest of the week at a garage. Proper on the job learning. My first car was my Xena the Xsara. It was a cold winter and the door handle snapped as it was plastic, guess where the de-icing spray was......yes, in the car.

My first car was a 1964 Mini... I practically rebuilt it before I passed my test...
I've been playing around with various vehicles of both the two and four wheeled variety for almost my entire life - from about three years old...
And that goes for all manner of mechanical items - later on, from about the age of ten I branched out into electromechanical and electronic.

Re: What was your first car and first repair you did to it.
My first car was a 1930 Ford model A 2-seater. Bought in 1963 for my 16th birthday. Mostly original condition although the previous owner (a drag racer) had severely tweaked the original engine somewhat. It did an obscene speed which for a new driver was nothing short of hair raising given the performance of the rod-actuated brakes.
My first task was to replace the front spring, a multi-leaf elliptical mounted above the front beam axle. A pig of a job.
