This discussion of oils worries me slightly, as in price over performance. The engines from yesteryear are different to new engines. I drive and old car 06, that wasn't designed to run on modern engine oil. Like an old car running on new fuel it's being forced into doing something it wasn't designed for. It will surely have a detrimental effect over time. I personally think that you should stick to as close as original spec as possible regardless of price. Let's be honest, we're all idiots for having old cars.......

Lots of good points made with respect to oil.
Jim's already mentioned the DV6 silly sump (modified version pictured in here somewhere) and the quantity it retains.

Diesels general seem to turn the oil black readily, think that's why diesel spec oils are supposed to be higher detergent qualities.

I'm sure the well known brands are supposed to be good, but I'm too cheap for relying on that brand reputation, hence it's all about the spec to me, if meets the makers spec then that'll do.

The more modern diesel's here including the DV6 needs 5W30 in ACEA C2 spec (I think, it's C3 if not C2 - will check shortly!)

The older stuff is 5w40, I'll look up the ACEA specification in a bit, the petrol EW10J4 and old 8v DW10 HDi can have the same stuff from memory. Though neither of those engines/cars are on the road at present so oil changes somewhat academic presently!

To me cheap (but correct specification) oil at more frequent change interval would definitely be better than top brand left in for the standard interval.

Out of pure interest, or maybe devilment, I can say that I drive old cars, and always will, for three reasons:
1. I can look after them myself.
2. I wouldn't invest more than 3k of my hard earned in anything which is continuously vulnerable to the actions of others.
3. I like them!

:-D

Yes, yes, and yes Mick! :)

The blue 308 is my first ever exception to number 2, I'm normally happier in the sub-£1500 range!

Fair enough on all fronts Gibbo! :)

Interesting article popped up today:
https://www.carexpert.com.au/car-news/p ... 8-recalled

Wonder if that's only 308 SW in Oz or us that are the other way up too?

.gov (MOT history check site) seems to think so:
This vehicle has an outstanding recall.
If you're the owner or driver of this vehicle, contact the local PEUGEOT dealership to arrange a free repair.

If the recalled component has been repaired recently, it can take several weeks for the manufacturer to update their records.

This information is provided by the vehicle manufacturer. If you think the recall information is wrong, contact your local PEUGEOT dealership.

That Takata air bag problem seems to be worldwide 42 million cars in the US and the journalists are making a meal of it, meanwhile Takata filed for bankruptcy

Ah interesting. I have heard about the Takata airbags (including the Citroen C3 / DS3 "stop driving" instruction) but did not realise it was extended to seat belts too.

That was me having a 'senior moment' Matt, I meant airbags. :( I've edited out.

If the 6+ refers to mental age we are all screwed but some of the older participants might appreciate the exercise from using it.

Ah, thankfully this is "6 months plus" so I've just about exceeded the threshold of competency for this - able to sit up unaided etc :-D

Sadly the 'new' pump has demonstrated this isn't what's behind the C5 non-starting. Performance with the new pump is identical: a repeatable "cough" but no more than a cough. Bloody thing.

Head scratching (and something to eat) is next.

Oh, and fur future reference: (accidentally) leaving the pump's high pressure fuel output connection only finger tight will not allow meaningful fuel pressure to build, but will allow it to piddle instead! #-o
