2014 CITROEN BERLINGO ENTERPRISE ABS ISSUE

Unread post by RoyE »

Hi,
I'm new to this forum and hoping I can get some help with an ABS ISSUE on my van. The warning light comes on after a short time of driving. Up to that point, if I brake, there's a grinding noise. Once the ABS light comes in, the grinding stops and the brakes work on. I also noticed that the speedometer is not correctly registering the vehicle speed until the ABS light comes on. After the light comes on, the speedometer works correctly. What does the wheel sensor detect as the wheel rotates? There looks to be wearing on the surface that passes through the sensor path and I wondered if something has been removed through some kind of abrasive action. I would really appreciate any help. Thank you!

Hi, There are many videos about ABS sensors on Youtube if you simply put "Berlingo ABS sensor fault" in the search box of Youtube you will be able to see all about it. :)
I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure!
I used to ride on two wheels, but now I need all four!

Is this on the front or rear axle?
The sensor picks up a magnetic track that is part of the wheel bearing on the front axle and on the rear hub (if i remember right) for the rear axle.
Is there any free play on the wheel when you jack it up?

That's answered my question perfectly thank you. It's the front drivers side. I noticed that the magnetic track had worn away. I have an understanding of how abs sensors work but wasn't sure of the exact methodology used on the van. If the magnetic track is worn away, I'm guessing I need to replace the wheel bearing? I wasn't sure if the track was part of the hub from looking at it but thanks to your help, I know what to look for. Thank you for helping me know what to look at!

Yes, replacement of the bearing is required. Make sure you fit the new one the right way round!

One thing worth trying before delving into replacing bearings or sensors. The design of the hub and sensor allows the sensor to be pushed away from the hub, and the tone ring, which can give ABS faults.

Remove the sensor form the hub, it's a single bolt.

Clean out -thoroughly- the area behind the sensor. This may require a hammer and chisel\screwdriver to chip away the rust that builds up in here.
