Regarding the 'crankcase sensor car' Peter, an 'outside the box' thought has just occurred to me, could there be an issue with the fuel tank breathing? :)

Hi Mick

I don't thinks so, we drove over 300 miles round trip when we picked up the new car and it doesn't seem to make any difference how far you drive the symptoms are the same, it does it when you first start it and when you stop on a long journey. Every few seconds the speed drops slightly then it sort of 'coughs' and returns to normal. Just occasionally it stops but starts instantly.

Peter,

Did you replace the crankshaft sensor with new or reuse your original one ? I had the same problem with mine originally cured by replacing with good brand make ie Febi, bosch etc.

RE lds hydraulic pump, the response is quick. This suggests the leak is allowing air into the system slowing it down or low LDS level or both.

When you drop the car to its lowest setting with Diagbox if you open the LDS tank if you see frothing then there is air in the system.

We put a brand new one in when Jim and I went down Kenny and that is when we discovered the plug problem. :)

Just saw you reply Mick as I was editing. I suggest checking continuity of the wiring or resistance test. If that is fine then not sure what the problem is.

As wheeler said camshaft sensor is only used when starting.

Have you had the Diagbox on it since the change and are there any fault codes.

Hi Kenny

Both faults were there before we changed the crank sensor, after I changed the sensor the car wouldn't start at all, another sensor was tried with the same result, that was when Mick and Jim came down and put Jim's Diagbox on it and discovered the plug was o/c, I replaced the plug and lead from the scrap car and it started and drove fine.

On the way to Scotland I thought I would try disconnecting the MAF for 1200 miles after that it drove perfectly then it started the stalling business, I plugged the MAF in again and it improved it for a while but by the time we got home it started doing it again.

Peter,

When you say stalling, do you mean it cuts out completely or it's stuttering for a moment then runs fine for a while then stutters again and repeats.
This steadily gets worse until it cuts out.

Hi Peter,
This chap is still in Poole :)
If you and fellow forum members remember i had what was called The Devil Car that Mike T bought off me and got running. It was a 1.6 HDi C5 X7 but it had similar symptoms to your problem child.
Does it have a flat spot that feels like there is as best as i can describe a blocked fuel filter, foot down and nothing, lift off and then foot down a bit of stutter/splutter and it picks up with that gut feeling that when you stop it will stall or worse when you go to pull away at a junction ?
Does the cruise control work and then cut out until you restart?
I know the 1.6 had the double butterfly doeser valve and the turbo pressure solenoid issues but just thought it maybe worth having a look through to see if codes/symptoms are similar

Hi Colin

How are you keeping, had thought about you but had lost your contact details. It did have a flat spot but the new crankshaft sensor seems to have cured that although it does improve if you disconnect the MAF. With the maf connected it runs a bit rough at tick over and sometimes stalls, it runs slow and then fast every few seconds and sometimes stalls. Never used the cruise control so wouldn't know about that.
