Is there "a process" for connecting to Android auto?

Is there "a process" for connecting to Android auto?

When I plug my phone into my C5 2024 usb, My Android auto only connects properly 4/5 times, the rest of the time the screen goes blank and it asked me to reconnect, and this can mean unlocking my phone through to restarting my phone or restarting my car??? Is there any way to guarantee Android auto connects. Is there "a process" for connecting to Android auto?

Is it an old phone? What version of Android does it run?
