C1 gearbox query

My '11 plate C1 manual doesn't downchange into 2nd gear from 3rd, without selecting 1st first...if that makes sense. All other gearchanges are sweet, both up and down, no crunching. Changed the oil, which was in excellent shape with no obvious swarf. So my query is, synchro shot between 2/3, or a clutch issue (which would affect every gear)?

Not a clutch issue for sure but will it change down straight from 4 to 2?

Could be a selector cable problem.

Will check the 4/2 shift in the morning...
I keep hearing about the selector cables, but they're semi-flexible rods so curious how they'd affect the shift other than a worn joint at the ends. And they don't seem to have any adjustment in them...how would they wear other than lack of free movement in their tubes? Perplexing...

Update...
Spoke to a gearbox specialist and likely to be 2nd gear hub issue so realistically a replacement box needed... the hunt begins.
