Peugeot Expert (2019) - Parking Assistance Issue

Unread post by Dr_Dave_1961 »

I have a 2019 Peugeot Expert (Vin No VF3**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff]) with an intermittent problem with the rear parking sensors which manifests itself with a message on the infotainment screen (and the service light) alerting me to an issue with parking assistance. I can’t remember the exact wording and at the moment the parking assistance is working again so I’m obviously not getting the message to display.

The van came with an RAC Warranty but it’s not the best. It appears they’ll only pay the equivalent cost of pattern parts so if I was to need Peugeot OEM part I’d need to pay the difference. Also, they limit the hourly labour rate to……..wait for it……£45 an hour.

I’ve approached 3 garages (none of them Pug dealers) but none have called me back. I visited one garage and the manager told me they weren’t willing to take the job on. I’ll doorstep a couple more garages during the week, but before I do I was wondering if this is perhaps an issue that only a Pug dealer will be able to fix. I read another thread on this forum from someone who replaced the sensors etc with official Pug parts (on a Peugeot Boxer, I think) but the Pug dealer was unwilling to ‘code’ it for him.

I’m a dinosaur when it comes to modern vehicles with all their electronics, hence why I’m looking for any info that can enlighten me as to any hurdles or pitfalls I or a local garage might encounter with, for example, coding any new sensors or the parking assistance ECU if they are the cause of the issue.

Being a dinosaur, my best guess is that either there’s a sensor (or sensors) needing replaced, there’s some damage in the wiring, or it’s the parking assistance ECU…or perhaps it’s something else.

For what it’s worth, I have an X-tool diagnostic device which I plugged in and did a scan which threw up a few codes, the most relevant of which (I think) are…

Parking Assistance
B1223 Inner rear left parking assistance sensor
B1224 Outer rear left parking assistance sensor fault

Other codes which may or may not be related are…

Controls Under the steering wheel
B152C Radio Controls fault

Rain and Brightness Sensor
U1F03 Fault: no communication with the built-in systems interface
U1807 Park information fault

Telematic Unit (RTx) or Audio Navigation
B100C RCC connected audio system electrical supply
B1503 Rear left audio output
B1504 Rear right audio output

If it was just one or two of the sensors AND it is something I could replace myself with pattern parts and without the need for some ‘Peugeot exclusive’ electronic wizardry then I might be cheaper just doing the job myself because of the £45 per hour labour limit.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

I would check the wiring at the rear sensors but also swap one of the faulty ones with a good one from the other side and see if the fault moves. If it does it is most likely a sensor fault so you could just buy another and fit it yourself. I am not sure but I think replacing a sensor does not require any coding. You might find the outer sensors are different parts to the inner ones.

Make sure they are clean as well and not covered in dirt.

Thanks for that info, PaulC5. I appreciate you taking the time to reply. Would you happen to know if it's possible to unclip the sensors without having to take the bumper off?

Please diregard my question about removing the bumper. I've been blessed by a fairly rain free day here, so my old bones allowed me to get under the rear end of the van. Removing some of the screws and bolts allowed me enough room to pop out the two sensors on the left hand side. The plastic casing of the inner sensor is damaged and a piece is missing. I've had the van for around 8 months and I can't see the damage having been there that long without it causing issues, so I assume someone has probably nudged the bumper in a car park. Not enough to damage the bumper at the relevant sensor, but enough to break the plastic on the sensor body. Well that's my theory anyway.

So, I now have the correct part number and have decided to replace both left hand sensors. I can't get the OEM (Bosch) ones any time soon, so I've opted for pattern parts. Hopefully they work okay. Time will tell. I expect if the warranty company got wind of the physical damage to the sensor, I'd be stuffed for a warranty claim.

Thanks again to PaulC5 for responding to my initial post.

I had to return the first sensors I ordered as they weren't compatible. Got some from Autodoc, albeit delivery was a bit slow. Perfect fit, worked a treat, no coding necessary and all is now well.

My next conundrum is to work out why when I plug my phone in to the USB port it's as if there's a loose connection so it alternates between my phone apps and the van's radio. Tried various cables. Makes no difference. Maybe that "Controls Under the steering wheel - B152C Radio Controls fault" means something after all.

Good to see the parking is sorted. I have used Autodoc before and the delivery time is due to them being in Germany, despite having .uk websites.

I did eventually notice the sensors were coming from the continent when I did a bit of digging into Autodoc. I'd probably still have ordered from them if I knew it was going to take a little longer. I certainly don't regret using them. Many other places were going to take at least a couple of weeks to get them. I think we're just spoiled these days with same or next day delivery for many things, not just vehicle components.
Thankfully, all is well with the van and it's racking up a few miles these days. My poor Kadjar must be feeling neglected now.
