C5X PHEV CHARGING RANGE

Unread post by DRC »

I have a 2022 Citroen C5X. It is due to come out of warranty next week and just had a dealer service and MOT.
I haven't been happy with the range charge for past year. The first year it charged to 30 t0 32 mile range but last year during colder months was only reaching 17 mile range with car hybrid battery capacity showing 100%. When queried with dealer told this was the norm with E.V and Hybrid batteries.
As the weather this year has increased I still get no more than 27 miles range at 100%.
The dealership did diagnostic check and said the battery was fine.
If fine why has the battery full charge range decreased?
I have passed this onto Citroen U.K to look into and awaiting a response.
Has anyone else had this issue?

All I can say is sorry, your car is not unique. I'm a sad so-n-so (edited for the forum) and have recorded every charge and drop of petrol my car (C5X, Sept '22) has had since purchase last June. So I have a good idea what to expect, and.......your figures are not far off mine, and I am only about 75 miles further south than you.
In December, Guess-o-meter showed 19 miles and last summer it got up to 31 miles when fully charged. However, I have noticed that quite often it will drive more than the guess-o-meter suggested.

Would that be based on how you drive like petrol/diesel vehicles? If it's all electric then surely it would consider heating/air con etc and anything else battery operated so I guess it would change between summer and winter.

Just remarking on charging capacity rather than actual driving mileage.

What is the range indicator telling you. It seems likely that it learns from recent trips. So it says to itself “I’m at 100% battery and based on my most recent experience that will take you xx miles”.

The petrol equivalent is distance to empty which looks back at the last few mile (no idea of the algorithm but I guess weighted over 20 to 50 miles). If I fill the tank it knows it’s full, if I’ve been in town for a week it gives me DTE of 430 miles. If I set off on a long trip it says hey, we’ve been doing 55mpg for a while, DTE is now 500. It’s not making petrol, it’s learning from recent experience.

So how you drive, or more importantly how you have driven recently, will influence what it tells you how many miles a full charge delivers, as will external factors like temperature and traffic.

I’ve just got a C4 hybrid, not PHEV, at the end of each trip it tells you what % was done on battery. A trip I do often, c. 10 miles mix of A rad and urban, it normally says 30 or 35% of the time was on battery. In the last few days, over 30C outside and aircon very busy that drops below 5%.

I wonder if your battery is just fine and the distance gauge is reacting to real use.

The car battery indicator is saying 100% with range of 27 miles, but my ohm charger for 27 miles states charged to 93% which appears to be more accurate. I think because the car is saying it is at 100% the charger will not charge any further to protect the battery?

You have to remember, that manufacturers always build a buffer zone into traction batteries. The most i have ever added to my battery is 11.2kW. Which is not that far off 10% less than the total battery capacity of 12.4kW.
So, 93% of 12.4kW is about 11.5kW, so it's very possible your Ohm charger is telling you it added 93% of your battery's capacity, and not the actual capacity. Does the Ohm know the battery size in the car - probably.

It's set via car model and year.

The other setting on Ohm charger is the 2023+ models which have the 40 mile battery top up range.

Well, I didn't know that, I thought they all had the same battery, the 2023+ models must have the bigger Aircross battery - Hmmm

NB. at Launch Citroen Stated 39 mile WLTP.

I use a 13amp Granny charger and just let it do its thing, use the on-board timer to start the charge (00:30), then unplug the car in the morning when I get up, usually takes about 3 hours to charge, well within my tariff limits.

I have the household plug charger also and tried charging. Took longer but still no change to maximum mileage added. Again car charge reader cutting it off when reaching 100%.

When you say "change to maximum mileage added" your not expecting either 39 or 40 miles are you? That figure is the WLTP figure, consider it make believe. To achieve 39 miles to a full charge the car would have to achieve an average of 3.5 kW/mile, and get get anywhere near that you would need to get all your ducks in a row...... TYre Pressures, Road surface, Ambient Temperature, No A/C, No lights, carry a certain weight, etc....
This guy has it all, good weather included and lots of hills to use his regenerative breaking on, also notice at the start he starts with only 32km of range on the GOM, but actually achieves almost double.

Hi, no I am not referring to the mileage I can travel on the electric mode as aware that is affected by various things. Just referring to the 30 to 32 maximum mileage it used to charge up to at 100%. This is what has decreased in last year down to max of 27 miles at 100% charge.

That figure will fluctuate over the year, in December mine was showing 19 miles, then it crept up to 26-29, the other day (late June) it displayed 31 miles, but i actually drove 35 miles and still had 8% (2 miles) remaining, so in my calculations I would have got close to the magic 39!, however, today I've got 33, only time will tell the actual range I get.
I know of others who get more than 39, but they live in sunny Spain.
Depending where you live, how you drive effectively the estimated range. ( you could probably add your grannies age into the calculation too)

Did you note that in neither of those tests did he exceed 50 Mph.
