Dead Car

Unread post by boristhespie »

2006 2ltr hdi Citroen C5

I recently had new sphere and replacement hydraulic fluid put into the car by a clearly non specialist (they did the MOT) after the car collapsed spewing the fluid all over the road. The rusty sphere bust.

Anyway the car just died. No electric. No dash info. Not able to open close doors etc. i went in, the car hydraulic pump started, I put on the key, it turned over once then died.

I did think fuse. But i put a jump starter on battery and it attempted to turn over. Which I would assume wouldnt happen had the fuse gone.

Can't help but wonder if it is something the garage hasnt done which has damaged something eg pump.

Any ideas?

I have just spent £1300 on this car and am determined it aint being scrapped

Sounds like a dead battery and a weak jump pack. Try with a good battery before looking for anything more obscure.

Yep, I second the thoughts on battery as the starting point (no pun) here. Properly charge that one and try again, or swap it for a known good one and then do a BSI reset.

I guess it’s possible they disconnected a main ground and forgot to reconnect it, but start with the battery.

The "rusty sphere bust" = HIGHLY unlikely.

What is more probable is that a pipe has burst..... and as such I would be very worried about the "fix" they did to that (non specialist garage/what sounds like a unlikely event reported etc)..........IF this is what has happened and they have "fixed" it like they would with standard brake pipes (copper pipe/compression flair joint) then you NEED to get that corrected ASAP.

I hope I am wrong.........

They said they couldnt find any leaks at the time.

Not sure what the outcome of above is. Possible failed braking?

Please note I aint mechanically minded. Hence reliance on garage.

EDIT: MULTIMETER on battery reads okay. Yet there is nothing. Yet when I attach my jumpstart pack all the systems make usual noise. The wipers went down. There are numerous clicks and the suspension compressor/pump kicks in. It turned over but not biting. Do a couple times then it goes dead. Despite pack still at 100%

I had a Machine Mart jump pack, not sure of the exact model but was 900 something or other. It never had enough in it to turn over the C5 and when I opened it up found its battery was tiny, the sort a motorbike might use. It went to the recycling centre.

Anyway, it looks as if for some reason your battery has gone flat giving all the odd electrical faults so follow the advice of wurlycorner. Possibly the battery went flat at the garage and it killed it off so might need a new one.

The suspension hydraulic system is not connected to the brakes so if it did leak the brakes will still work.

Depends on which pipe/sphere caused the leak....

Find a local specialist once it is running and ask them to check....(no, Citroen Main Dealers are NOT specialists in these older systems...mostly)
There are good reasons (higher pressures/pump pules etc) as to why Compression/flair joints are not often used on a Citroen....if they have been used they are MOT fail I understand.

Check the battery voltage with the ignition and headlights turned on.
