Stuck on the road with my Citroen Dispatch/Jumpy automatic diesel from 2013

Unread post by nimo »

Hi,
I have a small campervan, a Citroen (in Sweden: Jumpy, in UK: Dispatch). It is from 2013. I am on a longer road trip and yesterday after already having driven a few hundred kilometers it would sometimes kind of lose power. Ie: when pressing the accelerator pedal nothing would happen at first, then it would start to try to accelerate in an very uneven manner. This problem would come and go intermittently. All this happened late in the evening on the Friday. Today Saturday only one workshop were open and this was just a tiny garage out in an industrial area. They ran diagnostics and just said that more additive, and maybe EGR-valve would need to be fixed and that maybe the injector for the fourth cylinder were not behaving correctly . But that was nothing they could do. So they just charged me a lot for running the diagnostics.

Tomorrow Sunday not car mechanics are open here in Sweden so I guess I will have to wait until Monday morning.

Based on the following error codes:
  • P0401
  • P129F
  • P0409
  • P0272
  • P2566
  • P1283
  • P1445
  • P0303
  • P0062
Does anyone have any guess what the problem might be? Is the assessment from the mechanic (which I didn¨t got the best impression from) correct in his assessment?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Follow this link and you may be able to find the codes you have. Only thing I can offer I'm afraid: :)

Try disconnecting the MAF sensor. It can cause those symptoms. Costs nothing to check.

Just disconnect it or disconnect and reconnect it?

Just disconnect, it will throw a lamp up probably but no other issues

Just disconnect and drive, it would show an EML light but don't worry. Drive and see if that stops or helps the issue. It shouldn't cause any damage to your engine when unplugged. I drive 06 C8 and it's permanently unplugged.

Thanks for the suggestion -- I unplugged it and took a short (10 km) test drive -- and I think it got better -- but engine-led is still blinking and yellow warning triangle still steady on.

What function does the MAF-sensor provide? Ie: which of the engine's function wouldn't work with it plugged out?

The engine will work under a default setting instead of a measured value.

The MAF sensor measures the amount of oxygen you are feeding into the engine and the ecu then injects the correct amount of fuel to produce the right mixture. If the MAF gets very dirty or breaks or even clogs it will result in the wrong amount of fuel being injected. Unfortunately it is very difficult to clean the MAF sensor mechanically as it is an exceedingly delicate filament but you can get aerosol cleaners to spray into the intake side to try cleaning it before you lay out for a replacement. :-D

eg: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/326583859805 ... R8bCgcHlZQ

With the MAF disconnected the ECU will resort to a default table within its memory and based on engine speed, engaged gear and vehicle speed it will inject a pre defined amount giving you performance but it will not be optimised either for power or for economy. :-D

Thanks for all your replies! So I assume it still makes sense to replace the MAF-sensor?

You will find a huge range of after market MAF sensors available for what seems a very reasonable 25 Euros and upwards, but beware of many fakes on the market. Go for a sensor from a known manufacturer and from a parts source you know and trust. It could well cost 70-100 Euros but will be a quality OEM replacement. However I would invest 10 Euros or so on a can of cleaner first as long as you can see the filament in your unit is not broken. Ideally remove it from the car and look through it and you should be able to see what looks like an old fashioned light bulb filament stretched across the tube. As long as it is intact it is worth trying a cleaner before you invest in a new unit. Good luck :-D

I would recommend replacing it if it needs replacing. I wouldn't recommend anyone driving their own vehicle without it connected for a long length of time, apart from me of course.

Turned out it was the EGR-valve and particle filter that needed to be fixed.
