Check engine oil level

Unread post by Spacetourerman »

Hi all,

I have a 2018 C4 grand spacetourer, the car was serviced a month ago (approx 1000 miles). Over the last couple of days we've had the yellow message box with 'check engine oil level' and the 'service' light pop up on start up. It's happened three time, two of which was when the car was on decent slope so I put it down to that as when the car was restarted on a flat ground the message did not reappear. Dip stick was also reading approx 1/4 between min and max. However, the third time was starting up from home which isn't perfectly flat but we've not had that problem before. Dipstick check again and it is at the similar sort of level.

I didn't check the dipstick immediately after the service so have no reference from that point of view. No obvious leaks on the ground, it has the cover underneath the engine but I took a front wheel off and had a peak to check to see if there was anything I could see, the top side of that cover looked completely dry and clear of any oil etc.

Just wondering what your thoughts are?
Thanks

The level sensors can be a bit fussy, but if it's near the bottom then I'd stick some oil in. This is a 1.2 as I recall? They like to use a bit of oil... make sure you use the correct spec for the cambelt!

Hi Richard, yes you're right, 1.2L. We got a new cambelt last year which still looks in good nick!
I'll take it to the garage (we get free oil top ups) and ask them to top it up, I reckon it'll only need 250ml to satisfy the sensor and bring the dipstick reading to about have way?

Min to max on a dip stick can be a litre or a bit more depending on the car. If a garage puts 1 litre less in it saves them money but in your case with free top ups that is not the case. When topped up check the level before running the engine so you can see if oil is being used.

So I phoned the garage and they assured me the car was ok when I reported the issue I was getting above.

I haven't had it again since, until today. However today it was accompanied with a flashing red oil can light. No oil pressure message though. When checking the manual I can't see what it relates to when a red oil can flashing light. I can see when that light is fixed then it's the oil pressure.
Any advice or thoughts guys?

Edit: this only came on when switching the ignition on, not starting the engine. I turned the ignition off then started the engine, no lights or messages appeared.
