I am going to be doing my poorly glowplugs in the next few days, And I realise number 4 cylinder is a right pig but has anybody got any tips about the amount of stripping down, order to remove stuff etc
Really don't fancy it but its got to be done soon[V]

I had to remove the small rubber water pipe adjacent number 4 plug, you will need a suitable 12mm open ended/ring spanner and my favourite piece of kit, a magnet on a stick to retrieve nuts and washers,I also use quarter drive sockets for access which helps, put some copper grease on the threads so they come out easily next time (and pray that the last guy to do the ones on your car used some too. took me about half an hour on Xant longer on ZX/BX because the intercooler has to come off.

The one really useful tool I found is a 12mm rachet spanner essential (a straight one, not angled), I bought a halfords one. With the number 3 plug removed and the intercooler pipe mount removed you can use the rachet spanner to crack and undo the number 4 without having to take the spanner off after each turn (a ring spanner is a must). Magnetic retriever is also a must and removing the water pipe gives more room (be careful though I have had that pipe crack before).

A 12mm offset ring spanner was what I needed to get at number 4 behind the fuel pump, the rest are easy in comparison. One tip is to put a rag down between the injector pump and the engine block, it'll catch dropped nuts, glowplugs and sockets. If anything gets in the way and is easy to remove, do so because it'll save time in the long run.

Carl,
The other pipe is connected to the turbo as you say but you can get it off from the top-offside of the engine.
If you shine a torch down there and feel the pipe and follow it, it joins a 90° angled rubber section and is connected with a jubilee clip, which is 7mm and should be accessible from the top, with an long extension (the clip should be visible).
Adam.

This might sound daft, 1 plastic pipe goes to inlet manifold from intercooler, can see how that comes off no problem, under that is the other plastic intercooler pipe that runs up to behind the head, where does it split, or have I got to get underneath to dissconnect from the turbo

The pipe that goes down to the turbo is a real pain to get off. The one on my '97 Xantia was held onto the turbo by 2 bolts, but it was clipped on to the turbo too just so that it isn't too easy to remove. On top of that, access is near impossible to the two bolts, you can't reach them from the bottom and you can't feed long extension bars down to them from the top. I had to take that pipe off on mine when I was doing the timing belt but because I had the engine mount undone, and the engine on a trolley jack I could move the engine forwards and down enough to get my hand in.
In the past when I've done glowplugs I haven't removed that pipe, I've worked around it.
On an unrelated note, I was looking under the bonnet of an Escort van with a 1.8 diesel engine, access looks good under there to the injectors, glowplugs etc, in fact it looked easy to work on, no turbo or turbo pipes to get in the way.
