Losing oil, oil consumption and intercooler

Unread post by rorova5 »

Hi all,

Had service done May 2024. First since vehicle in my possession. Berlingo Bluehdi BHW 1.6 2017

Had done 58k miles at time of service, now its at 63k.
Oil was visible on the exterior of intercooler, possibly from pipe. Now tightened it.
Vehicle has had rad pack changed before, so its possible the soft pipes are faulty or wasn't tightened fully.
Got oil low light at 61k miles. Topped up 500ml.
Oil low light again at 63k miles, topped up another 500ml. Now dipstick is three lines from bottom.
Garage used 0w30 castrol oil
Van carries heavy load from time to time.

Is this normal oil consumption? Think its 1.5l after 5k miles. Van didn't have any low oil warning before the service was done. It's possible the garage didn't fill to top too.

If not, I took apart the air system to intercooler and found the following amount of oil. Is this not excessive? Vehicle runs fine otherwise, no noises from turbo. I also revved vehicle with pipes removed, no spitting of oil from the turbo or crankcase. Granted, engine was cold and didn't max out the rpm.
No play in turbo shaft, it's possible it could be the pcv..

Please share opinions and experiences.

I have a dispatch with a 2.0hdi engine which is using around 1 litre every 6-700 miles.

An independent Citroen specialist found oil in the intercooler and changed the turbo, but this has not changed the oil consumption at all. Luckily this was done under warranty as I had only owned it a few months!

I have looked in the ccv valve and pipe from the air filter to the turbo intake, and have found a puddle of oil in the pipe on the intake side of the turbo, so assume the oil must be coming through the ccv, as I can't see any other way for it to end up on the intake side.

So I will now replace the rocker cover. Might be worth doing this first in your case as a new turbo came to nearly £3k.

I am not sure if this is a common issue or not though. Also not sure about what 'normal' oil consumption should be. Definitely less than a litre every 600 miles though.

My money is on PCV valve also.
Can only be either that or leak at the turbo intake side, no otherway oil can get in the intake.

There is usually a bit of oil around in intercooler pipework it is pretty normal, I would look into replacing the PCV first.

Just to follow up on this after replacing the rocker cover my oil consumption is now zero so seemed to be the issue with mine.

£250 for the part and a couple of hours to change so worth trying before doing anything expensive, especially if there is oil on the intake side of the turbo.

Is the PCV integral to the rocker cover - so that is what was the problem?

Yeah it's all one piece, I couldn't find anything obviously wrong with the old valve but don't completely understand how it works.

There was an updated part number for it so the design might have been improved over what was fitted originally.
