check that the two parts of the air filter housing are fitted together properly.when a new air filter is fitted it is quite easy for the two bottom locating lugs to miss there slots.this can cause a burbling noise when revved or under load.

yes diesels can pink,another alternative is to go to a good garage for a diagnostic,even though the engine management light isnt on it can still have some fault codes stored in its memory.
ive also seen some early dci,s camshaft pulleys come loose,sheer the woodruff key,causing the cam timing to go out,causing the engine to run ok but sound different!
the only way to check this is to have the timing belt stripped off etc!
