Re: Injectors misbehaving but trying to understand the numbers
Hi Jim, It's with the wheels hanging and running her through the gears. The knocking gets worse the higher the gear and speed. I am going to pull the calipers and discs off just to rule out interference from the brakes. Glitter without chunks is normal enough, id expect to see a certain amount of it. I need to eliminate everything else first before condemning the gearbox. The right hand shaft I am happy is good. The left hand seems to be good too, I'm hoping my brake theory is correct. I will post up hopefully tomorrow, the weather here is awful all day so can't get near it until then.

Watching with interest Darren. Let's hope brakes or hubs... A collapsed wheel bearing in the hub could well account for all of it...

Yes hopefully, I will double check bearings as well but I am 99% sure they are ok.It's entirely possible. Waiting on the rain to stop it hasn't let up since Thursday evening. Forecast is to dry up in the afternoon.
Hoping the summer is dryer this year to allow me to build a path across to the garage.

If it gets much worse we'll all evolve to have webbed feet

Water world, Jim
I pulled it apart and ran it without brakes. This Iis the noise of the diff I think that I can condemn the gearbox now. I doubt it would be worth rebuilding it.

Re: Injectors misbehaving but trying to understand the numbers
Oh gosh yes Darren, sounds like it's full of spanners...
Having had gearboxes in bits in the past I'd say it's likely BER and it'll be a lit better to source a good spare. It shouldn't be too difficult one hopes.
Then, do pull the 'box to bits and see what's gone... I'd think it'll be either the diff bearings or the diff sun/planet gears breaking up. BE3 'boxes had a habit of doing that if you tried to put too much oomph through them and the whole lot exited the 'box stage left!!!

Unfortunately yes I think you are spot on there. I have never taken a gearbox apart so new experience awaits. If nothing else this car is teaching me more about cars than any I have owned before.i will as you suggest buy a spare and then take the old one apart.

Re: Injectors misbehaving but trying to understand the numbers
Ok so I have stripped engine and gearbox top side. I need to drain the gearbox, pull the shafts and disconnect the exhaust and gear cables. I will do this later this evening and tomorrow.i Have added pictures to show the steps I take to do it. I started at 14:30 and it's 18:00 so about 3.5 hors to get to this point.thats coolant in the basin. It's that pink stuff I find it gets very frothy.

Re: Injectors misbehaving but trying to understand the numbers
Well I just drained the gearbox and the oil is like mayonnaise/milk. I don't understand how water could have gotten into the gearbox as the car was complete up until a few hours ago and I only filled the oil the other day and it's not like the coolant system is linked to the gearbox.anyone ever seen this before. I'm changing the gearbox anyway but I don't want this happening again.

Re: Injectors misbehaving but trying to understand the numbers
Did you leave gearbox breather/overflow/vent cap open and rain water got somehow into the gearbox ?

Re: Injectors misbehaving but trying to understand the numbers
Hopefully "motivational" photos from when I had the gearbox out on mine.
If you can find a gearbox, I'd just swap it complete.
Sorry to hear it's thrown yet another challenge at you!

That (black plastic) bumper lower support and the (aluminium) support/crash bar behind it also comes out.
Engine crane (and long chain) let me take the weight and lower the gearbox down. Jack and piece of wood under the sump taking some of the engine weight - not visible in the photos.

No the cap was put back on as soon as it was refilled.
Yeah not too bad, I've to pick up the gearbox tomorrow morning. It's to rain here all day tomorrow so it will be Saturday before I can fit it. I got the exhaust and gear cables disconnected last night as well so just driveshafts and engine mounts left to do.i will do the shafts and lower mount today and a few other bits.
I have a replacement sourced as I say Matt. She's a nice looking car your c5. Did you ever get it going again. hopefully nearing the end of the road I think it just loves axle stands.. I have a lot of other projects I need to get to. This has just swamped me the last couple of years.i have a couple of hundred paving slabs to put down and I need to pour a couple of paths as well so plenty of hardship awaits. I don't think herself likes me resting
. I just saw your other post. I considered removing the gearbox in the engine bay is it difficult or is it easier to pull both together I can usually get it out fairly easily with all of the supports in place. And split it on the driveway but I would prefer to just pull the gearbox and not disconnect the fuel system. I stripped back the front to protect the rad, condenser, fan and bumper. I find it easy-ish to separate on the driveway.
I'm back to work on Monday so I want to get as much done as I can Saturday, Sunday I'm heading to an American car show and lunch out so won't be anything done after that until Monday evening.
