Luckily my drive is brick,……but going on the rest of the car I'm confident it’s pretty rust free. it’s the 3.0l v6 that comes with the exclusive model, and it was made in 1998.

i have removed the exaust goten the idea to get it to a mirror finish realised it would take way to much effort
and just left it like this i might finish this off later to be fair but i think im going to use a ruffer grit sand paper on the angle grinder to make it quicker.

Hi Scott,

Apologies if meant in jest, but I wouldn't attempt to polish up a mild steel exhaust, if you want it shiny then would be better getting something made in stainless steel.

Think mild steel would be a constant battle to keep shiny and between the corrosion and you grinding/ polishing it back again you'd eat through the thickness of it on short order!

your 100 percent right in hindsight if it was stainless it would be worth polishing because as you say you would be constantly fighting it to get rid of the rust, to be fair its on the bottom of the car and it still does its job of being very noisy ill just leave it the way it is for now

hey everyone I hope you are all well I have some updates on the work I have been doing, i have been tackling the main structural piece that goes behind the wing and the the piece that is in the wheel arch, I cannot buy these pieces so I have resorted to making some of my own, the first stage was doing a bit of reading about mental work, and I then made a

Masking tape

and a buck of the original piece I wanted to replicate and bashed the steel into shape I needed to make some pie cuts to allow for the curved

although it doesn't look exactly like the original thing im quite happy with it and it is very strong

the next piece I needed to make was the one in the wheel arch I tried to patch the original some time ago, but looking back at my original repairs they don't meet the standard I want to put on the car the were a lot of holes in the metal that would have just rusted back through so I decided I would make one from scratch. the first thing I needed to do was for a template so I built these out of masking tape

and this give me the rough shape , so I could trace it onto sheet steel Citroen used 0.6 mm steel quiet unique and I had to source it form a specialist and I made it in 3 sections and welded it together and this is the result

it needs a bit of finishing but it fits like a glove so im happy with how it came out in the end, thank you all for reading I hope you enjoyed

Thats a very useful lead thank you for that , it would always be useful to have some parts incase of emergency. I will definitely have to look into it.

Really interesting to see your work. I cannot get a couple of the photos to open in Imgur. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE ensure that your photos are safe on there as it would be awful to lose this reference point and it might inspire others to save their Xantiae.

All too frequent people give up on their cars.

I have saved War Horse for another year with some work to the sills but this has inspired me. I am glad though that I didn't see this thread 10 days ago else I could have gone down this rabbit hole. In future, it has given me food for thought. I mean drilling out all those spot welds? What dedication and the right way to do it. I have the original factory structure manuals so all the information is in there when I can lay my hands on them.

ive kept pretty much all the photos ive taken down the years saved so ill give it a go trying to transfer them onto the post I had trouble because of the format so I will try and look into how to get the on here, if the are any that could be useful to you I can find them for you and upload them.

its a very sentimental car so im gonna always try and look after it it might just take me a bit longer, its a shame that some project never get finished I think for citroens like ares especially as parts can be quiet hard to get these days, which adds its own set of challenges.

was it patch pieces for your sills, what type of work did you need to do, its always good to help get the car through another year, they have so much character, I have some patches I need to weld in but looking at it I think it might be best to take the whole outer sill of and try and kill as much rust of as I can, I saw on eBay you can buy replacement sills so that could always be helpful, ive seen they like to rot along the sill and were the c pillars come together
