Identifying the purpose of this hole please...

Could someone please identify the purpose of this hole in top of the front of the engine please.

Which engine is it ? Is the hole in the bellhousing or gear box since a bit difficult to tell, maybe a picture showing more of the engine would help.

The engine is a 1.6

Presumably a manual gearbox? 5speed? 6 speed?

The latest pic shows the bonnet latch at the front, so that’s definitely at the top/right hand side (gearbox end) of the engine

I'll have a look at mine tomorrow... Mines the Blue HDi version so may be a little different in detail. I don't think it's a problem on yours if there's nothing leaking out of it and the engine runs well...

Just looked rather strange to this Old Codger as I thought that there just may be a plug missing.

When I thought a picture of more of the engine might help, I had hoped for one showing all of it, not just a small part, so it could be seen from one end to the other end of the gear box. I should have been more specific.

I had a look at our 308 1.5 hdi and it has a couple of similar looking holes about 2 cm deep at the gear box end which go through the cam carrier/cover. No idea what they are for but a possible guess they may be used for locating dowels when assembling or maybe other versions of the engine have something fastened there.
