FORD Ka 2011 1.3 TDCi EGR FAULT

Unread post by Skull »

My Daughter's car has started playing up with EML showing @ 111,517 miles. No previous problems in the last 9 years.

So far i've stripped out battery/tray/ECU and 3 T20 bolts on the end of the ERG solenoid but it wouldn't separate, a look at access to remove the EGR completely for cleaning reveals horrendous access that prompted me to re-assemble :rofl2:

I borrowed a code reader and P0401 appears:

I cleared the codes @ 111,545 miles and gave it a hard drive, with instructions to do likewise, that was about 50 miles ago but a text message tonight - the light has returned.

A search of the internet resulted in no guides to removing the EGR - the most similar I found was a 2005 Fiat Panda on youtube.
EDIT:PANDA

A call to Evans Halshaw responded with a “we only service cars we don’t repair them”

The main problem I have, is her requirement to have a car as she lives in a small village with no bus service and works 5/6 days a week, so off-road time is critical.

Initial thoughts are to try a fuel additive/cleaner to add on the next re-fuel as that seems the easiest route to try.

I'm reluctant to try the aerosol cleaner method in the air inlet because the distance/route between an access point and the EGR area is too extended.

Any recommendations for a diesel fuel additive that you have tried with some success :?:

When I had EGR issues on the C5 I tried Wynns and Lucas EGR cleaners and neither made much difference. I was then recommended JLM egr cleaner which proved very good indeed, I treated the system twice a week apart and had no further trouble right up to selling the car. I would say it is not cheap though, I think I paid about £45 for it!! :o :)

EDIT: I just had a look and this is the stuff but it is even dearer now!! :?

I've heard of people using Mr Muscle spray foam oven cleaner on EGRs and suchlike. Can't vouch for its effectiveness though.

Yes Bobbins IF I can remove it off the car then something like that or Cillit-Bang should do the trick with a good scrubbing ...

I think the Mr Muscle spray is used with the EGR in-situ, you just have to get access to one end of it. Most people just start the car once the cleaner has done its thing and cross their fingers.

Thanks RichardW similar code/access problems by the sound of it - wouldn’t hurt to take a peek before I start the job

Can you get live data on the scanner? Might give a pointer as to whether it is the DPF sensor, or blockage in the EGR pipe. Probably not an EGR fault, as I would expect this to flag a position fault on the EGR valve.

I have some photos of screenshots but don't have regular access to the car - just when it needs fixing

It's my first time using a code reader so I don't understand much ...

Hasn't worked (yet) ....

EML reset twice over last 140 miles.

Now 111,800 miles and I've ordered the EGR gaskets, likely I will be removing the EGR for cleaning at the end of this week, looks a tricky access job, dreading it to be honest
